Shapwick, Dorset
Shapwick is a village and civil parish in east Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour, Dorset, River Stour five miles south-east of Blandford Forum and eight miles north of Poole. The village had a population of 190 in 2001. Within the parish, about a mile to the north-east of the village, is the British Iron Age, Iron Age Hillforts in Britain, hill fort of Badbury Rings. In Roman Britain, Roman times there was a Roman Fort at Crab Farm, between Shapwick and Badbury Rings. Just to the west of the fort was a small Romano-British town, believed to be that listed in the Antonine Itinerary as ''Badbury Rings#Vindocladia, Vindocladia''. Shapwick lay on the important Roman Road from Old Sarum to Durnovaria (now High Street and New Road), and the river Stour was forded here, being a major crossing-point in Roman times. Durnovaria is a suggested spelling for the Latin form of the name of the Roman town of Dorchester in the modern English county of Dorset, amended from the actually observed Durnonovaria. Upon the assumption that the name was originally Brythonic, it is suggested that the first element in the name, ''*durno-'' may mean "fist" like ( Welsh ''dwrn'' ‘fist, knob’) and the second may be related to Old Irish ''fáir ~ fóir'' denoting a confined area or den. A simpler amendment (one letter instead of two) would lead to *Duronovaria, making this place one of up to 18 ancient British names that contain Duro- and mostly occur at river crossings, while -novaria has two possible ancient parallels in Britain associated with river junctions. The 1900 Summer Olympics (), today officially known as the Games of the II Olympiad () and also known as Paris 1900, were an international multi-sport event that took place in Paris, France, from 14 May to 28 October 1900. No opening or closing ceremonies were held. At the Olympic Congress of 1894, which convened in the Sorbonne (building), Sorbonne building, Pierre de Coubertin proposed that the Olympic Games should take place in Paris in 1900. Charles Bennett (athlete)
Charles Bennett (9 December 1871 – 18 December 1948) was a British athlete, winner of the 1500 metres at the 1900 Summer Olympics and the first British track and field athlete to become Olympic champion. He was a member of Finchley Harriers (founded 1877) which was amalgamated into Hillingdon Athletic Club in 1966. Biography Bennett, a train driver born in Shapwick, Dorset, was one of the top British Middle-distance running, middle-distance runners in his years, winning the List of British champions in 5000 metres, British 4 miles title after winning the AAA Championships title at the 1897 AAA Championships and 1898 AAA Championships. Additionally, he won the cross country running title in 1899 and 1900. Also in 1900, the Olympic year, he won the British title in the mile at the 1900 AAA Championships, qualifying himself for the 1500 m in Paris.
