Shape Modeling International
Shape Modeling International (SMI), also known as ''International Conference on Shape Modeling and Applications'' is an annual symposium whose goal is to promote the dissemination of new mathematical theories and novel computational techniques for modeling, simulating, and processing digital shape representations. Initiated in 1997 by Tosyiasu L. Kunii and Bianca Falcidieno, the symposium became an annual event in 2001 after its merge with the Eurographics / ACM SIGGRAPH Workshop on Implicit Surfaces. The venue of the symposium rotates in turn among Asia, Europe and America. This article describes shape analysis to analyze and process geometric shapes. Description ''Shape analysis'' is the (mostly) automatic analysis of geometric shapes, for example using a computer to detect similarly shaped objects in a database or parts that fit together. For a computer to automatically analyze and process geometric shapes, the objects have to be represented in a digital form. Most commonly a boundary representation is used to describe the object with its boundary (usually the outer shell, see also 3D model). However, other volume based representations (e.g. constructive solid geometry) or point based representations (point clouds) can be used to represent shape. Once the objects are given, either by modeling (computer-aided design), by scanning (3D scanner) or by extracting shape from 2D or 3D images, they have to be simplified before a comparison can be achieved. Bianca Falcidieno
Bianca Falcidieno is an Italian applied mathematician whose research interests include computer graphics, geometric modeling, shape analysis, and mesh generation; she has been called a pioneer of semantics-driven shape representation. She is retired as a research director for the Italian National Research Council (CNR), where she led the Shape Modeling Group of the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies (IMATI). Education and career As a master's student, after earning a degree in mathematics in the 1970s, Falcidieno became interested in computer graphics and geometric modeling through a project to visualize mathematical functions for use in teaching mathematical analysis to engineering students. Symposium on Geometry Processing (SGP) is an annual symposium hosted by the European Association For Computer Graphics (Eurographics). The goal of the symposium is to present and discuss new research ideas and results in geometry processing.
