Shanmugham Road
Shanmugham Road is a major road of Kochi, India, named after R. K. Shanmukham Chetty who was the Diwan (title), Diwan of the Kingdom of Kochi from 1931 to 1945. It runs parallel to Kochi Backwaters, and popularly known as Marine Drive, Kochi, Marine Drive. It is a busy and highly commercialised street of the city, dotted with shopping centres and offices. Initially, the road ran next to the backwaters. In the 1970s, land was reclaimed close to the road, yielding a narrow strip of prime real estate. This strip of land currently houses shopping malls and apartments. A tree lined walkway now borders the backwaters, which is a tourist attraction. More than half of the reclaimed land is left as open space, often used for gatherings, demonstrations and shows. Diwan (title)
''Dewan'' (also known as ''diwan'', sometimes spelled ''devan'' or ''divan'') designated a powerful government official, minister, or ruler. A ''dewan'' was the head of a state institution of the same name (see Divan). Diwans belonged to the elite families in the history of Mughal and post-Mughal India and held high posts within the government. Etymology The word is Persian in origin and was loaned into Arabic. The original meaning was "bundle (of written sheets)", hence "book", especially "book of accounts," and hence "office of accounts," "custom house," "council chamber". The meaning of the word, ''divan'' "long, cushioned seat" is due to such seats having been found along the walls in Middle Eastern council chambers. It is a common surname among Sikhs in Punjab. Kingdom Of Kochi
The kingdom of Cochin or the Cochin State, named after its capital in the city of Kochi (Cochin), was a kingdom in the central part of present-day Kerala state. It originated in the early part of the 12th century and continued to rule until its accession to the Dominion of India in 1949. The kingdom of Cochin, originally known as Perumpadappu Swarupam, was under the rule of the Later Cheras in the Middle Ages. After the fall of the Mahodayapuram Cheras in the 12th century, along with numerous other provinces Perumpadappu Swarupam became a free political entity. However, it was only after the arrival of Portuguese on the Malabar Coast that the Perumpadappu Swarupam acquires any political importance. Perumpadappu rulers had family relationships with the Nambudiri rulers of Edappally. Marine Drive, Kochi
Marine Drive, officially the APJ Abdul Kalam Marg, is a promenade in Kochi, India. It is built facing the Kerala Backwaters, backwaters. Despite its name, no vehicles are allowed on the walkway. With several shopping malls it is as an important centre of shopping activity in Kochi. The walkway starts from the Kerala High Court junction and continues until the Rajendra Maidan. There are also several jetty, boat jetties along the walkway. The walkway has three bridges: the Rainbow bridge, the Chinese Fishing Net Bridge and the House Boat Bridge. Park Avenue, Kochi
Park Avenue is a famous tree-lined road starting from the western end of Durbar Hall Road to Broadway in the city of Kochi, India. Two large parks, Subhash Bose Park and Indira Priyadarshini Park are situated along the road, hence the name. Several famous historical buildings are also located alongside the road. The road has more than 45 flowering trees planted on both sides, forming a thick canopy over the road. This 1.5 km stretch was considered to be a model road for the city and it extends further north as Shanmugham Road.
