Shanghai Rumba
''Shanghai Rumba'' is a 2006 Chinese romance drama film written and directed by Peng Xiaolian, starring the real-life couple Yuan Quan and Xia Yu (before their marriage in 2009). Set in 1940s Shanghai, the story is loosely based on the real love story of film actors Zhao Dan and Huang Zongying Huang Zongying (; 13 July 192514 December 2020) was a Chinese actress and writer. Yuan Quan
Yuan Quan (, born 16 October 1977), also known as Yolanda Yuan, is a Chinese actress and singer. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama where she majored in drama. Career Yuan starred in her first film '' Rhapsody of Spring'' (1998), which won her the Golden Rooster Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her subsequent films also earned her awards; '' Once Upon a Time in Shanghai'' (1998) earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Rooster Award and ''A Love of Blueness'' (2000) brought her the Best Actress trophy at the Beijing College Student Film Festival. Xia Yu (; born 28 October 1976) is a Chinese actor. At the age of 18 years, he rose to international prominence after winning the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival in 1994 for his leading role in the film '' In the Heat of the Sun'' and became the youngest actor to win that award in the history of the Venice Film Festival. Peng Xiaolian (; 26 June 1953 – 19 June 2019) was a Chinese film director, scriptwriter and author. A graduate of the 1982 class of the Beijing Film Academy, she was a member of the Cinema of China#Rise of the fifth generation, Fifth Generation, although her style differed from the other members of this group. Zhao Dan
Zhao Dan (June 27, 1915 – October 10, 1980) was a Chinese actor popular in the golden age of Chinese Cinema. Biography Zhao first became famous working in the Mingxing Film Company in the 1930s including playing opposite Zhou Xuan in '' Street Angel'' (1937). After the Sino-Japanese War, Zhao began a creative relationship with director Zheng Junli, with films such as the 1948 anti-Kuomintang drama-comedy, ''Crows and Sparrows''. Zhao remained on the mainland following the Communist victory in 1949 and continued to make films throughout the 1950s and 1960s notably in biographical films playing historical figures of Nie Er, Lin Zexu (both directed by Zheng Junli) and Li Shizhen. Zhao joined Communist Party of China in 1957. During the Cultural Revolution, he was persecuted and imprisoned for 5 years. He died of pancreatic cancer in Beijing in 1980. Huang Zongying (; 13 July 192514 December 2020) was a Chinese actress and writer. She starred in many black-and-white films such as ''Rhapsody of Happiness'' (1947), ''Crows and Sparrows'' (1949), '' Women Side by Side'' (1949), and '' The Life of Wu Xun'' (1950), all co-starring her third husband Zhao Dan. She began writing film scripts in the mid-1950s, and later became an acclaimed writer of reportage literature.
