ShanghART Gallery
ShanghART Gallery is founded in 1996 by Swiss gallerist Lorenz Helbling as one of the first contemporary art galleries established in China. Initially operating out of a hotel, it has since expanded to four gallery spaces, two in Shanghai, and one each in Beijing and Singapore. For the past two decades, ShanghART has devoted to the development of contemporary art in China and kept close and long-term cooperation with more than 60 artists, building an audience for artists ranging from painters such as Yu Youhan and abstractionist Ding Yi (artist), Ding Yi (the artist of the gallery's first exhibition), to artists midway through their career, Zhou Tiehai and Yang Fudong, as well as emerging artists like Zhang Ding and Chen Wei (artist), Chen Wei. Art Gallery
An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. The long gallery in Elizabethan and Jacobean architecture, Jacobean houses served many purposes including the display of art. Historically, art is displayed as evidence of status and wealth, and for religious art as objects of ritual or the depiction of narratives. Huangpu District () makes up the eastern part of Shanghai's traditional urban core and is today the most central of Shanghai's 16 districts. Zhang Enli () was born 1965 in Jilin Province, China, is a professional artist living and working in Shanghai. He graduated from the Arts & Design Institute of Wuxi Technical University, China in 1989, and teaches at the Arts and Design Institute of Donghua University. His paintings depict the familiar and overlooked, everyday objects connected through the artist's immediate surroundings, often from unusual viewpoints or focusing on seemingly insignificant details. He produces works that invite universal interpretation. He often works in series, such as his paintings that focus on the idea of the container—cardboard boxes, ashtrays, tin chests and lavatories. Xu Zhen
Xu Zhen (Chinese 徐震), born in 1977 in Shanghai, China, is a multimedia artist. Xu Zhen's body of work, which includes photography, installation art and video, entails theatrical humour and social critique. His projects are informed by performance and conceptual art. Xu's work focuses on human sensitivity and dramatizes the humdrum of urban living. Biography Xu Zhen's earlier representative individual works include the video, ''Rainbow'' (1998), where an abstracted hand beats a man 's back until it burns red. Wei Guangqing
Wei Guangqing () (born 1963 in Huangshi City, Hubei Province) is a contemporary Chinese painter. He is known most of all for his ''Red Wall'' and ''Made in China'' Series. Wei Guangqing was one of the main members of the “85’s New Wave Art Movement”. In the 1990s he became one of the most well-known "political Pop artists". His work adopts a flat and symbolic composition, linking traditional ethics and modern culture. “Red Wall” is a symbolic work of pop art, using the traditional woodcarving-illustration prints and stories, through the process of Pop, to imply the various meanings of contemporary private and secular life. Wang Guangyi (; born 1957) is a Chinese people, Chinese artist. He is known as a leader of the new art movement that started in China after 1989, and for his ''Great Criticism'' series of paintings, which combine socialist imagery, particularly from the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), and Western consumer brand logos. Tang Da Wu
Tang Da Wu (, ; born 1943) is a Singaporean artist who works in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation art and performance art. Educated at Birmingham Polytechnic and Goldsmiths' College, University of London, Tang gave his first solo exhibition, consisting of drawings and paintings, in 1970 at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He began engaging in performance art upon returning to Singapore in 1979 following his undergraduate studies. In 1988, Tang founded The Artists Village. Melati Suryodarmo (born 12 July 1969) is an Indonesian endurance art, durational performance artist. Her physically demanding performances make use of repetitive motions and often last for many hours, sometimes reaching "a level of factual absurdity". Suryodarmo has performed and exhibited throughout Europe and Asia as well as in North America. Born in Surakarta, she attended Padjadjaran University, graduating with a degree in international relations before moving to Germany. She lived there for 20 years, studying performance art at the Braunschweig University of Art with Butoh choreographer Anzu Furukawa and performance artist Marina Abramović. Shen Fan (Chinese: 申凡; born 1952) is a Chinese contemporary artist currently based in Shanghai. He creates work of temperament of the classical Chinese literati arts with intuition. Early life Shen Fan’s childhood years were spent in the countryside. Around the age of ten, he went to Shanghai for study and finished elementary school and middle school. For the following six years, Shen did farm work in the countryside, planting all sorts of corps, and he would practice painting and calligraphy by himself when he was not working.
