Shang-class Submarine
The Type 093 submarine (NATO reporting name: Shang class) is a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines constructed by the People's Republic of China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Development The first-generation of Chinese nuclear submarines, the Type 091 attack and the Type 092 ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), were costly for their limited capability. There was little political support for further development after the Cultural Revolution; they were not a priority in Deng Xiaoping's Four Modernizations. Research on design and foreign developments continued throughout the 1980s, with a new reactor design in development by 1987. Support for new nuclear submarines emerged in 1994 under Jiang Zemin after the 1993 Yinhe incident and continued tensions with Taiwan. Bohai Shipyard
The Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Company (BSHIC) is a shipyard in Huludao, China. It builds civilian and military vessels; it is China's first and only shipyard for nuclear submarines It is a part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. It was formerly called the Bohai Shipyard. History The Bohai shipyard was founded in 1954 with a small slipway. Expansion in the 1960s included a large building hall with four submarine building bays and a graving dock. Construction of nuclear submarine started in November 1968. Kilo-class Submarine
The Kilo-class submarines are a group of diesel-electric attack submarines designed by the Rubin Design Bureau in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and built originally for the Soviet Navy. The first version had the Soviet designation Project 877 ''Paltus'' (, meaning "halibut"), NATO reporting name Kilo. They entered operational service in 1980 and continued being built until the mid-1990s, when production switched to the more advanced Project 636 ''Varshavyanka'' variant, also known in the West as the Improved Kilo class. Yinhe Incident
The ''Yinhe'' incident () occurred in 1993 after the United States government received intelligence that the China-based container ship ''Yinhe'' () was carrying chemical weapon materials to Iran. The United States Navy forced the surrounding Middle Eastern countries to refuse docking rights to the ''Yinhe'', leaving it in the international waters of the Indian Ocean for twenty-four days. The Four Modernizations (simplified Chinese: 四个现代化; traditional Chinese: 四個現代化) were goals formally announced by China's first Premier Zhou Enlai to strengthen the fields of agriculture, industry, defense, and science and technology in China.
