Shakapour
Shakapour (2 April 1977–after 1994) was an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed promise as a two-year-old in 1979 when he won the last of his three races. In the following year he won the Prix de Guiche and finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club before recording his biggest success when dead-heating for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. His career was ended by injury shortly afterwards and he was retired to stud where he made little impact as a sire of winners. Background Shakapour was a grey horse with a broad white blaze and four white socks bred in Ireland by his owner Aga Khan IV. He was sired by Kalamoun who won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix Lupin and the Prix Jacques Le Marois in 1973 before becoming a successful breeding stallion. The best of his other runners were probably Kalaglow (King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes) and Bikala (Prix du Jockey Club). Policeman (horse)
Policeman (16 April 1977 – 2001) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He raced only as a three-year-old in 1980, when he won three of his eleven races including a 54/1 upset victory in the Prix du Jockey Club. He began his racing career at Cagnes-sur-Mer where he won two minor races before being transferred to the major French racecourses in spring. After finishing third in the Prix de Guiche and the Prix Matchem he won the Prix du Jockey Club with a front-running performance, defeating a field which included Shakapour, Providential and Argument. He went on to finish third in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud but ran poorly in his last two races and was retired to stud at the end of the year. Policeman was exported to stand as a breeding stallion in New York State but had little success as a sire of winners. Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud
The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run at Saint-Cloud over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June or early July. History The event was established in 1904, and it was originally called the Prix du Président de la République (French for 'Prize of the President of the Republic'). It was initially contested at Maisons-Laffitte over 2,500 metres by horses aged three or older. It was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. Prix De Guiche
The Prix de Guiche is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts. It is run over a distance of at Chantilly in May. History The event is named after Antoine IX (1789–1855), the Duc de Guiche (and later Duc de Gramont), who founded the successful Haras de Meudon stud farm. The Prix de Guiche was established in 1865, and it was originally held at Longchamp. It was usually contested over 2,000 metres. It was cancelled because of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. Yves Saint-Martin
Yves Saint-Martin (born 8 September 1941 in Agen, Lot-et-Garonne, France) is a retired champion jockey in French Thoroughbred horse race, Thoroughbred horse racing. He is widely considered one of the greatest riders in French racing history. Saint-Martin won his first race on 26 July 1958 for Suzy Volterra, Mme Suzy Volterra. He went on to be France French flat racing Champion Jockey, leading jockey fifteen times, winning the title in 1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1981 and 1983. In his career, Yves Saint-Martin won 3314 races worldwide, of which 3275 were in France. He is tied with three others for most wins (4) in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and holds the record for most victories in several other Group One races, including the Prix du Jockey Club with nine. Shahrastani (horse)
Shahrastani (1983–2011) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He won four of his seven races between September 1985 and October 1986. He is best known for his performances in the summer of 1986 when he defeated Dancing Brave in the Epsom Derby and went on to win the Irish Derby by eight lengths. At the end of the season he was retired to stud, but made little impact as a stallion. He died in 2011. Background Shahrastani was a chestnut horse with a broad white blaze bred in Kentucky by his owner HH Aga Khan IV. Kalamoun (30 April 1970 – 7 February 1979) was a British-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Owned and bred by the Aga Khan IV, he showed promise as a juvenile, winning once and running well in the Observer Gold Cup and the Prix Thomas Bryon. In the following year he emerged as one of the best colts of his generation in France, recording Group One victories the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix Lupin and Prix Jacques Le Marois. He was retired at the end of the season and became a successful breeding stallion in a brief stud career. François Mathet
François Mathet ( at Vesoul – at Neuvy-le-Barrois) trained racehorses, specialising in flat racing. In France he is well-remembered for being one of the best equestrian trainers in the country's history. Early life Mathet was the son of an army lieutenant. In 1934, Mathet (as an amateur rider) won four of the best French titles. He was conscripted into the French Army in 1942, where he became an apprentice to Maurice d'Okhuysen at Maisons-Laffitte, still riding as an amateur jockey. Career In 1944, after a fall, he stopped riding horses and concentrated on horse training. In 1947 he was the trainer for François Dupré's stable. He took a long time to mend, but came back to win his first Group 1 race in 1948 with Bel Amour (horse) in the Prix d'Ispahan, going on to even better wins with Tantième and Relko. Tantieme
Tantième (1947–1966) was a French Thoroughbred horse racing champion and prominent sire who twice won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, France's most prestigious horse race. He also won several other important conditions races including the Grand Critérium in 1949, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix Lupin and his first Arc de Triomphe in 1950. Racing as a four-year-old, in 1951 Tantième won the Prix Ganay plus his second Arc de Triomphe and in England he captured the Coronation Cup. A stallion is an adult male horse that has not been gelded ( castrated).
