Shadowless Pagoda (film)
''Shadowless Pagoda'' () is a 1957 South Korean film starring Choi Eun-hee () as Guseul Agi (), a free-spirited woman, and Kwak Geon () as Asadal (), the stonemason credited with creating the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas at Bulguksa temple. The film was adapted from a 1937 novel by Hyun Jin-geon. Plot Guseul Agi, portrayed by Choi Eun-hee, is the daughter of Minister Yujong. She accompanies King Gyeongdeok on his tour of the Bulguksa construction site, where the completed Dabotap pagoda is widely praised. At first sight, she falls in love with Asadal—the stonemason played by Kwak Geon—whom she actively pursues. Eventually, she saves him from burnout, and as she cares for him, their relationship evolves. In contrast to the conventional melodramatic trope—that a man who assists a woman in distress will inevitably fall in love—the film reverses traditional gender roles. The ''Encyclopedia of Korean Culture'' () is a Korean-language encyclopedia published by the Academy of Korean Studies and DongBang Media Co. It was originally published as physical books from 1991 to 2001. There is now an online version of the encyclopedia that continues to be updated. Overview On September 25, 1979, a presidential order (No. 9628; ) was issued to begin work on compiling a national encyclopedia. Work began on compiling the encyclopedia on March 18, 1980. It began publishing books in 1991. The encyclopedia's first version was completed, with 28 volumes, in 1995. It continued to be revised beginning in 1996. King Gyeongdeok Of Silla
Gyeongdeok (景德王; 723~724–765) was the 35th ruler of Silla and son of King Seongdeok (reigned 702–737). He succeeded his elder brother, King Hyoseong, the 34th ruler of Silla. His reign is considered a golden age in Unified Silla's history, particularly for Buddhist art and architecture. He is noted as an avid patron of Buddhism and an influential political and religious individual. King Gyeongdeok also made attempts to centralize the country through reorganizing government and standardizing naming practices. Kwak () is a Korean surname. Overview The family name Kwak is written with a hanja meaning "city walls" (郭; ; also called ). The same character is also used to write the family names Guō in Mandarin Chinese, Kwok in Cantonese, Kaku in Japanese, and Quach in Vietnamese. Shin Sang-ok
Shin Sang-ok (; 1925 or 1926 – April 11, 2006), anglicized as Simon Sheen, was a South Korean filmmaker who directed 74 films in a career spanning over five decades. He is best known in South Korea for his efforts during the 1950s and 1960s, many of them collaborations with his wife Choi Eun-hee. Shin posthumously received the Order of Cultural Merit (South Korea), Gold Crown Cultural Medal, the country's top honor for an artist. In 1978, Abduction of Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee, Shin and Choi were kidnapped by order of Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong-il, who wanted them to improve the North Korean film industry.
