''Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor'' is a 2014 action-adventure game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. An original story based on Tolkien's legendarium, the legendarium created by J. R. R. Tolkien, the game takes place between the events of The Hobbit (film series), ''The Hobbit'' and The Lord of the Rings (film series), ''The Lord of the Rings'' film trilogies. The player controls Talion, a Ranger (Middle-earth), Gondorian Ranger who bonds with the Ghost, wraith of the Elf (Middle-earth), Elf Lord Celebrimbor, as the two set out to avenge the deaths of their loved ones. Players can engage in Melee (gaming), melee combat, and use wraith abilities to fight and manipulate enemies. The game introduces the Nemesis System, which allows the artificial intelligence of non-playable characters to remember their prior interactions with Talion and react accordingly in subsequent encounters. Christian Cantamessa (born October 4, 1976) is an Italian-American writer, director, and video game creator best known as lead designer and co-writer of ''Red Dead Redemption'' and the ''Manhunt'' series, designer on ''Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'', and writer of ''Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor''. He is also the founder and CEO of Sleep Deprivation Lab, which is a production company and video game consulting firm known for work on ''Rise of the Tomb Raider'', ''The Crew (video game), The Crew'', ''Forza Horizon'', ''Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor'', and ''Middle-earth: Shadow of War''.
