Shadow Of A Doubt
''Shadow of a Doubt'' is a 1943 American psychological thriller film noir directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and starring Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten. Written by Thornton Wilder, Sally Benson, and Alma Reville, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story for Gordon McDonell. The story follows Charlotte "Charlie" Newton and her family who live in very quiet Santa Rosa, California. An unexpected visit by Charles Oakley, her charming and sophisticated Uncle Charlie, brings much excitement to the family and the small town. That excitement turns to fear as young Charlie slowly begins to suspect that her uncle may be concealing a dark secret. In 1991, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Irving Bacon
Irving Ernest Bacon (September 6, 1893 – February 5, 1965) was an American character actor who appeared in almost 500 films. Early years Bacon was the son of entertainers Millar West Bacon (who was a teenager) and Myrtle Vane. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and grew up in San Diego, California. His parents divorced in 1900. His father remarried, to Lena Ann Davis in Spokane later that year. Career Bacon played on the stage for a number of years before getting into films in 1912 in Mack Sennett productions. The actor returned to the Sennett studio in 1924, and appeared frequently in Sennett's silent and sound comedies as a supporting actor. By 1933, Bacon was so well established as a utility player that he was pressed into service to replace Andy Clyde—wearing Clyde's "old man" costume and makeup—in a Sennett comedy. Charles Bates (actor)
Charles Edward Perry Jr. (October 22, 1934 – May 2023), better known as Charles Bates was an American child actor. Bates appeared in over 40 films between 1935 and 1952, mostly in small roles. He is probably best known as young Roger Newton in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller ''Shadow of a Doubt'' (1943). Other notable roles include '' The North Star'' (1943), ''San Diego, I Love You'' (1944), '' Pursued'' (1947) and '' Shockproof'' (1949). His last film was '' The Snows of Kilimanjaro'', where he played Gregory Peck's character as a 17-year-old. Bates went on to study electrical engineering, and retired from the State of California in 1996 as a senior electrical engineer. After retirement, he lived in the Pacific Northwest. Bates died in Spokane, Washington in May 2023, at the age of 88. Edna May Wonacott (February 6, 1932 – June 26, 2022) was an American child actress, best known for her role as Ann Newton in the 1943 movie ''Shadow of a Doubt''. The director, Alfred Hitchcock, and film producer Jack H. Skirball handpicked the then-nine year old for the film while she was waiting for the bus. At that time she had absolutely no experience as an actress. Wonacott received a seven-year contract and Hitchcock predicted that she would become a star within a year.
