Shabdatit Shantanu
''Shabdatit Shantanu'' () is a 1999 Nepali novel by poet Banira Giri. It was published in 1999 (2056 BS) by Sajha Prakashan and won the Sajha Puraskar for the same year, making Giri the first woman to win the award. Synopsis The book is set in Lahan village and depicts the life of that place and other nearby places. Reception The book won the prestigious Sajha Puraskar in 1999. Banira Giri
Banira Giri (11 April 1946–24 May 2021) was a Nepalese poet and novelist, best known for her novels such as ''Karagar'', ''Nirbandha'' and her poetry collections such as ''Jiwan: Thayamaru'', ''Euta Jiundo Jung Bahadur'', etc. In 1999, she received the Sajha Puraskar for her novel, '' Shabdatit Shantanu'', becoming the first woman to win the prize. She became the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. by Tribhuvan University for her thesis on the poetry of Gopal Prasad Rimal in 1985. Early life and education Giri was born on 11 April 1946 (29 Chaitra 2002 BS) in Kurseong, India. She studied in Darjeeling where she obtained an I.Sc. degree. Her future husband Shankar Giri had first seen her while she was studying in Darjeeling. She received her bachelor's degree from North Bengal University. Sajha Prakashan
Sajha Publications ( ne, साझा प्रकाशन, lit=Common Publication, translit=Sajha Prakashan) is the oldest publishing house of Nepal. It was established in 1913 and is funded by the Government of Nepal. Headquartered in Lalitpur, it has regional branches in Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadi. Litterateur and former bureaucrat Prahlad Pokhrel is the general manager of the publishing house. History Sajha Publications was established in 1913 (1970 BS) by the then prime minister of Nepal, Chandra Shumsher as ''Gorkha Bhasa Prakashani Samiti'' (Gorkha Language Publishing Committee). Sajha Puraskar () is a literary award given by Sajha Publications. It is presented annually to the best book published by Sajha Publication. History It was established in 1967 and the first award was given to Bhupi Sherchan for his book ''Ghumne Mechmathi Andho Manche'' in 1969. Lahan (लहान) is a city and municipality with 24 wards' in Siraha District in the Madhesh Province south-eastern Nepal. It is connected with Mahendra Highway, which is also called the east–west highway. It is located nearly 261 km east of the capital, Kathmandu via B.P. highway and E-W Highway & 424 km east via Narayanghat-Mugling Highway. ''Shirishko Phool'' ( ne, शिरीषको फूल; translated into English as ''Blue Mimosa''), published in 1964, is a Nepali language novel by Parijat. It was the author's first and most successful novel. It was awarded the Madan Puraskar in 1965. Background Born in an affluent family in Darjeeling, Parijat moved to Kathmandu and pursued her studies in English literature. According to her, having studied many French, Russian and Indian novels in particular, she found herself very disappointed with Nepali novels. Therefore, despite having started out as a poet, she resolved to produce an exceptional Nepali language novel. She wrote four novels while she was studying for her I.A. and B.A. degrees, all of which she burned off. ''Madhabi'' () is a 1983 Nepali mythological novel by Madan Mani Dixit. It was published on 13 April 1983 by Sajha Prakashan, and won the Madan Puraskar (2039 BS) for the same year. It is a retelling of the story of Madhabi and Gallav from Mahabharata. Written in a grandiose setting, the novel depicts the economic, social and political conditions of Vedic Indian society three thousand years ago. The original story is told in Mahabharat to Duryodhana to teach him about the result of stubbornness and how it can destroy life. The book illustrates the evils of ancient Indian society, such as slavery and patriarchy, and the helplessness of a woman in a patriarchal society and her exploitation by men. ''Yogmaya'' () is a historical novel by Neelam Karki Niharika. This book was published on February 17, 2018, by Sangri-La books. It won the Madan Puraskar, 2074 B.S. This book is based on the life of the activist Yogmaya Neupane. This novel provides an overall understanding of the women's rights movement in Nepal. Synopsis Yogmaya is based on the life of female protagonist Yogmaya Neupane (1860-1941), a religious leader and women rights activists born in Bhojpur, who fought against the autocratic Rana regime.
