Congregation Shaarey Zedek (Windsor, Ontario)
Congregation Shaarey Zedek is the oldest Orthodox Jewish congregation in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1893, the congregants initially met in private homes. In 1906, a dedicated synagogue was built at the corner of Brant and Mercer streets. It served the community for over 50 years. The congregation moved to its current location at 610 Giles Boulevard East in 1958. As of 2011, Congregation Shaarey Zedek has a membership of approximately 40 families. Shaare Zedek Cemetery, Jerusalem
The Shaare Zedek Cemetery is a small Jews, Jewish burial ground located behind the first Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. Originally used by the hospital as farmland for grazing Dairy cattle, milk cows, the area was converted into a temporary cemetery during the Battle for Jerusalem (1948), Arab siege of Jerusalem in 1948. Approximately 200 burials were conducted here between March and October of that year. Most graves were transferred to permanent cemeteries after the war, but a handful remain, notably those of several prominent Jerusalem rabbis and the founding director of Shaare Zedek Hospital, Dr. Moshe Wallach. Congregation Shaare Zedek Cemetery
Congregation Shaare Zedek Cemetery was a small Jewish cemetery located on the south side of East 88th Street between Fourth (now Park) and Madison Avenues on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, and owned by Congregation Shaare Zedek on the Lower East Side. It opened in about 1847 on a lot that was just over 50 feet wide by 100 feet deep, and was filled to capacity by 1859. In 1881, the New York City Board of Health granted permission for the congregation to disinter the bodies and move them to Bayside Cemetery in Queens, which Congregation Shaare Zedek also owned. However, the bodies were not moved at that time, and several years afterward, during construction of a building on one of the adjacent lots, the cemetery wall was damaged. The congregation then sought to move the bodies, but this was opposed by some former members of the congregation whose relatives were buried there. The Shaare Zedek Medical Center () is a large teaching hospital in Jerusalem. It was established in 1902 and is affiliated with Hebrew University of Jerusalem. History Shaare Zedek was the first large district general hospital to be located in the Western portion of Jerusalem and is today the city's fastest growing hospital and the only major medical facility in the city's center. In the Old Yishuv of Jerusalem, there were not many hospitals, and due to conflicts between the various groups, the German Jews were left without a hospital. Because of this situation, the German and Dutch expatriate community in Jerusalem decided to establish their own hospital under the patronage of the German Empire.
