Sha Na Na (TV Series)
''Sha Na Na'' is a syndicated television variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981 for a total of 97 episodes, hosted by the popular rock & roll/comedy group of the same name. The show was produced by Pierre Cossette and originally distributed by the Lexington Broadcast Services Company. Each episode ran for 22 minutes. Reruns continued to air in syndication through the 1982-1983 television season, after which the series left most markets. The show featured the group performing hits from the 1950s and 1960s along with comedy skits along the show's nostalgic theme but with a contemporary twist, with performances from that era's well-known acts as well as popular acts of the 1970s. Gary Jacobs (writer)
Gary Jacobs is an American television comedy writer and producer and author. He was born in New York in 1952, grew up in Dallas, and was educated at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his bachelor's degree in Journalism. Immediately upon graduation, Jacobs moved to New York to pursue comedy writing. His first job was at the Children's Television Workshop, where he became co-editor (with Ron Barrett) of ''The Electric Company Magazine'', a companion piece to the television series. A couple of years later, Jacobs landed his first television job, writing for ''The Dick Cavett Show''. Jacobs then moved to Los Angeles, and began accumulating credits, writing for both variety shows and situation comedies. His big break came when he was hired (with writing partner, Arnie Kogen) on the staff of ''Newhart''. Soupy Sales
Milton Supman (January 8, 1926 – October 22, 2009), known professionally as Soupy Sales, was an American comedian, actor, radio-television personality, and jazz aficionado. He was best known for his local and network children's television series, ''Lunch with Soupy Sales'' (later titled ''The Soupy Sales Show'') (1953–1966), a series of comedy sketches frequently ending with Sales receiving Pieing, a pie in the face, which became his trademark. From 1968 to 1975, he was a regular panelist on the syndicated revival of ''What's My Line?'' and appeared on several other TV game shows. Jon "Bowzer" Bauman
Jon "Bowzer" Bauman (born September 14, 1947) is an American singer, best known as a member of the band Sha Na Na, and game show host. Bauman's Sha Na Na character Bowzer was a greaser in a muscle shirt. Biography and career Bauman was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish-German Jewish immigrants. His father was a dentist and a singer in the Hollis Hills Jewish Center choir. Bauman started attending The Juilliard School at age 12 with an expertise in piano playing, and he is a 1964 graduate of Martin Van Buren High School. He graduated from Columbia University in 1968. Bauman was a member of the band Sha Na Na from 1970 to 1983. He was featured in the television comedy/variety show ''Sha Na Na'' from 1977 to 1981. Sha Na Na
Sha Na Na was an American rock and roll and doo-wop revival group formed in 1969. The group performed a song-and-dance repertoire based on 1950s hit songs that both revived and parodied the music and the New York City street culture of the 1950s. After gaining initial fame for their performance at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, made possible with help from their friend Jimi Hendrix, the group hosted ''Sha Na Na'', a syndicated variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981. Billing themselves as "from the Streets of New York", members were frequently outfitted in gold lamé or leather jackets and sported pompadour or ducktail hairdos. The group's name was taken from a series of nonsense syllables ("sha na na na, sha na na na na") in the song " Get a Job", originally recorded by the Silhouettes.
