Birr, County Offaly
Birr (; , meaning "plain of water") is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. Between 1620 and 1899 it was called Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were local landowners and hereditary Earl of Rosse, Earls of Rosse. The town is in a Civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish of the same name. Birr is a designated Irish ''Heritage Town'' with a carefully preserved Georgian architecture, Georgian heritage. Birr itself has graceful wide streets and elegant buildings. Many of the houses in John's Place and Oxmantown Mall have exquisite fanlight windows of the Georgian period. The town is known for Birr Castle and Gardens: the home of the Parsons family and the site of the Leviathan of Parsonstown, which was the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years. Colin Egan
Colin Egan (born 1989 in Belmont, County Offaly, Ireland) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Belmont and has been a member of the Offaly senior inter-county team since 2011. Playing career Club Egan plays his club hurling with Belmont. Inter-county Egan has lined out in all grades for Offaly. He started in 2007 as a member of the county's minor hurling team before subsequently joining the Offaly under-21 team. In 2008 he lined out in the Leinster under-21 decider, however, Kilkenny won that game easily. Egan was just out of the under-21 grade when he joined the Offaly senior hurling team in 2011. He made his debut as a substitute in a National Hurling League game against Kilkenny, however, he failed to secure a place on the starting fifteen. The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Club Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Leinster GAA, Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the champion senior clubs in the province of Leinster in Ireland.
