Seychelles Democratic Party
The Seychelles Democratic Party is a political party in Seychelles. It was founded by the late Sir James Mancham in 1964, and governed the country from 1976 to 1977. History After a time in exile in the United Kingdom, Mancham returned to the islands following the Seychelles' transition to democracy in 1993. He had led the SDP from the time of its founding. 2011 Seychellois Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Seychelles from 29 September to 1 October 2011. The elections were boycotted by all the main opposition parties. As a result, the People's Party won 33 of the 34 seats in the National Assembly. Background The 2011 elections in Seychelles were the fifth round of democratic elections since the country became an independent republic and separated from the United Kingdom. The Seychelles became a one-party state under France-Albert René, but were restored to a multi-party system beginning in 1991. 1992 Seychellois Constitutional Commission Election
Constitutional Commission elections were held in the Seychelles between 23 and 26 July 1992. They were the first multi-party elections since the 1977 coup had installed the Seychelles People's Progressive Front as the sole legal party. The commission was elected by proportional representation, with a threshold of 5% to win one of the 22 seats. General elections were held in the Seychelles between 23 and 26 June 1979 to elect a President and People's Assembly. Following a coup in 1977, the Seychelles People's Progressive Front (previously the Seychelles People's United Party) was the sole legal party at the time. Seychelles National Party
The Seychelles National Party (SNP) is a liberal political party in Seychelles. Its followers emphasize active multiparty democracy, respect for human rights and liberal economic reforms. It was founded in response to what it called the "totalitarian regime" of former President France-Albert René. It publishes a newsletter called ''Regar'', which is frequently sued for libel by government officials. On ''Regar's'' front page of every issue is a quote from the constitution of Seychelles invoking their right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
