Severn Bridge railway station was a small station on the Severn Bridge Railway located close to the north west bank of the River Severn, northeast of Lydney in Gloucestershire, England. History The Severn Bridge Railway linked Lydney Junction railway station on the north bank of the River Severn with Sharpness Docks on the south bank via the Severn Railway Bridge. Purton, Lydney
Purton is a hamlet on the west bank of the River Severn, in the civil parish of Lydney in Gloucestershire, England. It lies opposite the village of Purton near Berkeley on the east bank of the river. The name of the place derives from the Old English ''pirige tun'', meaning "pear orchard". It was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Purton was a small port, and there was a ferry across the river, Purton Passage, to the other Purton by 1282. In the late 18th and early 19th century, there was also a ford across the river here. In 1740, the removal of a large rock from the river bed on the Berkeley side caused the river to shift its channel. This meant only a single crossing a day was possible and led to a decline in the trade. The river had returned to its old channel ten years later, although it was altered by another shift in 1761. Sharpness ( ) is a port in the civil parish of Hinton, in the Stroud district, in Gloucestershire, England, one of the most inland in Britain, and eighth largest in the South West England region. Severn And Wye Railway
The Severn and Wye Railway began as an early tramroad network established in the Forest of Dean to facilitate the carriage of minerals to watercourses for onward conveyance. It was based on Lydney, where a small harbour was constructed, and opened its line to Parkend in 1810. It was progressively extended northwards, and a second line, the ''Mineral Loop'' was opened to connect newly opened mineral workings. To facilitate transfer of traffic to the neighbouring South Wales Railway main line, the Severn and Wye Railway network was converted from a plateway to a locomotive-worked broad gauge edge railway, and then to a standard gauge railway. Extensions were made to Lydbrook, Cinderford and Coleford. Sharpness railway station served the village and docks of Sharpness in Gloucestershire, England from 1875 to 1964. History The station was on the Sharpness Branch Line, part of the Midland Railway, which connected the Bristol and Gloucester Railway main line at Berkeley Road station with the docks at Sharpness. The Sharpness New Docks & Gloucester & Birmingham Navigation Company started operation at Sharpness in 1874. The branch line was opened to freight traffic in August 1875 with passenger services starting a year later.
