Seventh Street (Los Angeles)
7th Street is a street in Los Angeles, California running from S. Norton Ave in Mid-Wilshire through Downtown Los Angeles. It goes all the way to the eastern city limits at Indiana Ave., and the border between Boyle Heights, Los Angeles and East Los Angeles. Originally agricultural land, 7th Street between Broadway (on which corner stood Bullock's complex) and Figueroa Street, became downtown's upscale shopping district. This began with J. W. Robinson's deciding to build their flagship store in 1915 on Seventh far to the west of the existing Broadway shopping district, between Hope and Grand streets. The Ville de Paris and Coulter's as well as numerous specialty shops came and rounded out the district. The area lost its exclusivity when the upscale downtown stores opened branches in Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, Westwood and Pasadena in the late 1920s through the 1940s, notably the establishment of Bullock's upscale landmark branch Bullocks Wilshire in Mid-Wilshire in 1929. FIGat7th is an open-air shopping mall located in the Financial District of the downtown core of Los Angeles, California, United States. It is nestled between three skyscrapers, 777 Tower, Ernst & Young Plaza and the residential tower, The Beaudry. Some of its current retailers include Target, Starbucks Coffee, Morton's Steakhouse, Victoria's Secret, and California Pizza Kitchen. There are also weekly and monthly events hosted by the mall, such as a farmer's market and art exhibitions. The mall primarily catered to office workers in Downtown Los Angeles. With the rapid growth of the area's population, however, the mall has started to reposition itself to better serve the needs of the residential community. The A Line (formerly and colloquially known as the Blue Line) is a light rail line in Los Angeles County, California. It is one of the six lines of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system, operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). Walker & Eisen (1919−1941) was an architectural partnership between Albert Raymond Walker and Percy Augustus Eisen best known for the numerous historic buildings they designed throughout California, particularly in and around Los Angeles. The landmark Fine Arts Building is located at 811 West 7th Street in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Also known as the Global Marine House, it was declared a historic cultural monument in 1974. Architecture The building was designed by the architects Albert Raymond Walker (1881–1958) and Percy Augustus Eisen (1885–1946) in 1927. It is a compact twelve-storey block on a H-shaped layout plan with a façade of smooth and squared slabs of light-colored stone. Façade The first three stories present a striking façade with a trapezoidal profile. The building's streetside elevation is divided into three horizontal registers that echo the classic arrangement of a Renaissance palace in distinct lower, central and upper sections. William F. Curlett (County Down, Ireland, March 3, 1846 – January 21, 1914, San Francisco) and Alexander Edward Curlett (called Aleck) (San Francisco, February 6, 1881 – September 5, 1942) were a father-and-son pair of architects. They worked together as partners under the name of William Curlett and Son, Architects from . Aleck Curlett partnered with Claud Beelman as Curlett & Beelman (1919–1932). The San Francisco firm of Curlett, Eisen, & Cuthbertson, Architects, was active in the 1880s; it designed the Los Angeles County Courthouse in 1887. Barker Brothers Building, also known as Sassony Building and The Barker, is a historic seven-story building located at 722 S. Broadway in the Broadway Theater District in the historic core of downtown Los Angeles. May Company California was an American department store chain founded in 1881 as A. Hamburger & Sons by Asher Hamburger. It was renamed after its acquisition by The May Department Stores Company in 1923. Its flagship store and headquarters were located in Los Angeles, and operated throughout Southern California. It is well-known for its flagship store in downtown Los Angeles and branch store at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the latter of which has been featured in several vintage films.
