Settle Bridge Road
Settle's Bridge is a bridge in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The bridge crosses over the Dan River in between the towns of Stoneville and Wentworth. Prior to the original bridge's demolition in 1953, it was one of the last covered bridges in North Carolina. A modern concrete bridge was later built in its place. Thomas Settle (January 23, 1831 – December 1, 1888) was a United States Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Peru, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. Education and career Born on January 23, 1831, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, Settle received an Artium Baccalaureus degree in 1850 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and read law at Richmond Hill Law School in 1854. He was private secretary to Governor of North Carolina David Settle Reid from 1850 to 1854. He entered private practice in Rockingham County in 1854. Stoneville, North Carolina
Stoneville is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, United States. Stoneville is part of the Greensboro–High Point metropolitan area of the Piedmont Triad. At the 2020 United States census, the town had a population of 1,308. History Settlers came to the ridge between the Mayo and Dan rivers in the northwest Piedmont region in the early 1800s. In 1827, the Deep Springs Plantation was built for James Madison Scales and his wife Elizabeth Lesuer in what is now Stoneville. In 1843 the R.H. Lewis Tobacco company was established in the south side of the land that was to become the town of Stoneville. In the late 1850s, brothers Thomas and Pinkney Stone bought land in the area. On March 5, 1877, the town was officially incorporated. A natural stop on the Norfolk-Western rail line, Stoneville became the trade hub for the surrounding localities and profited off of tobacco, cotton and grist-milling industries. Covered Bridge
A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof, decking, and siding, which in most covered bridges create an almost complete enclosure. Mulberry Island Plantation
Mulberry Island, also known as the Penn Farm, is a historic plantation house in Stoneville, North Carolina near the Dan River. The home was once the seat of the Scales family and the Settle family, two prominent North Carolinian political dynasties. The house was part of a 1,298 acre plantation. History Mulberry Island was a large plantation located along the Dan River in Rockingham County, near Stoneville and Leaksville. The house was built by Nathaniel Scales (1756–1824) and his wife, who was a niece of Colonial Governor Josiah Martin. It faces south, looking down on the river valley. The plantation sat on 1,298 acres. Scales left Mulberry Island to his son, Alfred Moore Scales, upon his death. It adjoined Deep Springs Plantation on the Dan River, which was home to another one of Nathaniel Scales' sons, James Madison Scales. Wendell, North Carolina
Wendell ( ) is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. It is a satellite town of Raleigh, the state capital. The population was 9,793 at the 2020 census. History Incorporated in 1903, Wendell was settled in the 1850s, when farmers in Granville County were victims of a blight that came to be known as the Granville County Wilt. Their tobacco crops failed, and they chose to move to a new location with more fertile land for their crops. As settlement increased, a small village took form. The villagers asked the local schoolteacher, M.A. Griffin, to choose a name. Griffin suggested they call it Wendell, in honor of his favorite poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes.
