Setrak Sarkissian
Setrak Sarkissian ستراك سركسيان (1936 – 21 February 2017) was a Lebanese darbouka player of Armenian descent. He has won numerous awards in the Middle East and in Europe for his contributions to both traditional and modern Arabic music. His compositions and arrangements have been featured on over 30 recordings and movie soundtracks, including five with Farid al-Atrash. Biography Sarkissian was born in Beirut, Lebanon. His passion for music began early; inspired by his older brother's tabla playing at home and at family parties by 18 was learning to play himself. His family was not always supportive, since at that time music as a profession did not have a high social status, they even broke his drum. Not to be deterred, he continued to play and enrolled at the conservatory for further training. His skill was immediately recognized, and Sarkissian excelled rapidly. Fifi Abdou
Fifi Abdou (, , born Atiyat Abdul Fattah Ibrahim (), ; April 26, 1953) is an Egyptian belly dancer and actress. She has been described as "synonymous with belly dancing in the years she was performing." Early life and career Abdou was born as Atiyat Abdul Fattah Ibrahim'' in Cairo on April 26, 1953. Her father is a policeman and she has 11 siblings, including her brother Abdelraheem Abdul Fattah Ibrahim, who encouraged her career. When she was 12 years old she joined a baladi troupe and later found work as a model. She began to gain attention in the early 1970s when she became the main attraction at the Arizona. Ziad Rahbani
Ziad Rahbani (, born 1956) is a Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright, and political commentator. He is the son of Fairouz, one of Lebanon and the Arab world's most famous singers, and Assi Rahbani, one of the founders of modern Arabic music. Many of his musicals satirize Lebanese politics both during and after the Lebanese Civil War, and are often critical of the traditional political establishment. Personal life Ziad Rahbani is the son of the Lebanese composer Assi Rahbani and Nouhad Haddad, the Lebanese female singer known as Fairuz. Toufic Farroukh () is a Lebanese jazz composer, working in France. Overview Toufic Farroukh is a saxophone player and composer of jazz with a middle-eastern flavour stemming from his bi-cultural roots in Lebanon and France. His brother, a saxophone player, guided him in learning to play the instrument and taught him the basics. He was an amateur who instilled in Toufic the love of professionalism. Rony Barrak
Rony Barrak is a Lebanese darbouka player and composer. He began playing the darbouka (Middle Eastern Tabla) at the age of four. Career Barrak made his first TV performance at the age of seven and then proceeded to improve his skills through school and family performances. Rony started his first music studies at the age of sixteen, at Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (Music School department) in Lebanon. At the age of seventeen, Rony won the Gold Medal in a competition on the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI) television for talented young musicians in Lebanon and the Middle East. He moved to London in 1990 where he studied orchestral percussion and Drum kit at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and later taught Middle Eastern Percussion at Trinity College of Music. Bourj Hammoud (also spelled Burj Hammud; ; ) is a town and municipality in Lebanon located north-east of the capital Beirut, in the Matn District, and is part of Greater Beirut. Sabah (singer)
Sabah, (, , ) born Jeanette Georges Feghali, (, ) was a Lebanese singer and actress. She specialised in the Mawwāl, a popular genre of traditional music in the Arabsphere, and performed in many Egyptian films and songs. Over the course of her career, she earned many nicknames; the most popular being 'Al-Shahrura' (, , ), in reference to her her strong and rhythmic voice.
