Sessa is a former municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. On 18 April 2021 the municipalities of Croglio, Monteggio, Ponte Tresa and Sessa merged to form Tresa. History Sessa is first mentioned in 1335 as ''Sexa''. In the High Middle Ages, members of the Langobard military family, the ''de Sessa'' formed a noble corporation with lands centered in the current municipality. The noble corporation remained in power around the village until the reign of the Swiss Confederation. The ''Capitani'' of (de) Sessa were Imperial vassals. In 1240, Emperor Frederick II took control of Sessa Castle, which was probably in the village. Due to the tradition of imperial immediacy in the Malcantone region (including Sessa, Astano, and Monteggio), the Bishop of Como lacked the landlord rights he held in neighboring villages. Sessa Aurunca is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Caserta, Campania, southern Italy. It is located on the south west slope of the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina, by rail west north west of Caserta and east of Formia. It is situated on the site of ancient Suessa Aurunca, near the river Garigliano. The hill on which Sessa lies is a mass of volcanic tuff. Duke of Sessa is a Spanish noble title awarded to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba by Ferdinand II in 1507. It was the fifth ducal title bestowed on Gonzalo, after the ducal titles of Santángelo (1497), Terranova (1502), Andría (1507) and Montalto (1507). Its territorial designation refers to Sessa Aurunca, at the time in the Kingdom of Naples. The title is one of the numerous duchies created by the Catholic Monarchs and never represented any territorial claim. Biography Karl Borromäus Alexander Sessa was born in Wrocław, Breslau, Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia, in 1786. He studied philosophy and medicine at various universities, graduating as doctor of medicine in Frankfurt (Oder), Frankfort-on-the-Oder in 1807. He subsequently served as a district physician in his hometown.
