''Service with a Smile'' is a 1937 Fleischer Studios animated short film starring Betty Boop Betty Boop is a cartoon character designed by Grim Natwick at the request of Max Fleischer. Plot Betty Boop runs the newly opened Hi-De-Ho-Tel, which has 40 rooms and only two baths. Guests have many complaints, ranging from a drawer shelf nailed into the wall apart from the rest of the drawer to pillowcases filled with cement bags and faulty beds with very short blankets. When they stress Betty out, she calls Grampy, who remedies the guests' complaints by making several complex contraptions. Dave Fleischer
Dave Fleischer (; July 14, 1894 – June 25, 1979) was an American film director and producer who co-owned Fleischer Studios with his older brother Max Fleischer. He was a native of New York City. Biography Early life and career Fleischer was the youngest of five brothers and grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, a poor Jewish neighbourhood. By the time he was born, his father had lost his means of livelihood due to the mass production of garments. Fleischer worked as an usher at the Palace Theater on Broadway, where he was exposed to vaudeville. This experience contributed to the development of his sense for gags and comic timing, which came into play when he joined forces with his older brother, Max in the production of animated cartoons. At one point, the family lived in Coney Island, and he became interested in being a clown for one of the sideshow amusements. Grampy
Professor Grampy is an animated cartoon character appearing in the ''Betty Boop'' series of shorts produced by Max Fleischer and released by Paramount Pictures. He appeared in nine of the later ''Betty Boop'' cartoons beginning with '' Betty Boop and Grampy'' (1935). He had a starring role in the "Color Classic" '' Christmas Comes But Once a Year'' (1936). Grampy is an ever-cheerful and energetic senior citizen with a bald, dome-shaped head, white beard, and black nose (depicted with a red nose in color productions). One author speculates that the character's design may suggest he is Ko-Ko the Clown in retirement. His primary activities include singing, dancing and building Rube Goldberg-esque devices out of ordinary household items. Animation is a filmmaking technique whereby still images are manipulated to create moving images. David Tendlar
David Benjamin Tendlar (August 8, 1909 – September 9, 1993) was an American animator, best known for his work with Fleischer Studios and its successor, Famous Studios. Tendlar was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 8, 1909, and attended Stivers High School. He joined Fleischer Studio in 1931, where he worked on Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor, and many other shorts, as well as Fleischer's two feature-length animated films. Tendlar stayed on at Famous Studios after Paramount Pictures foreclosed on Fleischer and reorganized the company into Famous Studios. Tendlar was promoted to director at Famous Studios in 1953 (he also directed a Noveltoon ''A Self-Made Mongrel'' in 1945). He later did work for Terrytoons, Hal Seeger Productions, Filmation and Hanna-Barbera.
