Serro (musician)
Hulda Adhiambo, known professionally as Serro, is a Kenyan singer, songwriter and performer of benga, afro-pop and jazz style, known for her hit singles, "Rongai" and "Kasyoki Wa Mitumba". She writes and sings in Sheng slang. Career Serro started writing music in 2014 and released her first single, "Rongai", in 2016. "Rongai" became her signature tune until her 2019 single "Kasyoki Wa Mitumba", which she released in an acoustic version and a benga version. "Kasyoki Wa Mitumba" gained popularity since Serro performed an acoustic version of it live at East Africa's Got Talent in 2019. That same year her fifth single, "Ya Dunia", was released. In December 2019, she released another single, "Aheri" about broken promises in relationships. Benga Music
Benga is a genre of Kenyan popular music. It evolved between the late 1940s and late 1960s, in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi. In the 1940s, the African Broadcasting Service in Nairobi aired a steady stream of soukous, South African kwela, Congolese finger-style guitar and various kinds of Cuban dance music that heavily influenced emergence of benga. There were also popular folk songs of Kenya's Luo peoples that formed the base on benga creation. Luo Benga The Luo of Kenya have long played an eight-string lyre called ''nyatiti'', and guitarists from the area sought to imitate the instrument's syncopated melodies. In benga, the electric bass guitar is played in a style reminiscent of the nyatiti. African Popular Music
African popular music (also styled Afropop, Afro-pop or Afro pop), like African traditional music, is vast and varied. Sheng is a Swahili and English-based cant, perhaps a mixed language or creole, originating among the urban youth of Nairobi, Kenya, and influenced by many of the languages spoken there. While primarily a language of urban youths, it has spread across social classes and geographically to neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda. The music of Kenya is very diverse, with multiple types of folk music based on the variety over 50 regional languages. Zanzibaran taarab music has also become popular, as has hip hop, reggae music, soul, soukous, zouk, rock and roll, funk and Europop.
