Sergei Smirnov (intelligence Officer)
Sergei Mikhailovich Smirnov (, born October 12, 1950) is a retired Russian intelligence officer whose career ended with a seventeen-year stint as First Deputy Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB). He was made a Army general (Russia), General of the Army in 2006. Early life and education Born in Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai, Chita in 1950, his family moved to Leningrad in 1952. He later attended school alongside Nikolai Patrushev and Boris Gryzlov at the school No. 211. Together with Gryzlov he graduated from St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications, M.A. Bonch-Bruevich Leningrad Electroengineering Institute of Communications in 1973. He completed the Higher Courses of the KGB under the Council of Ministers of the USSR in Minsk in 1975. Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai
Chita (, ) is a city and the administrative center of Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia, located on the Trans-Siberian Railway route, roughly east of Irkutsk and roughly west of Khabarovsk. Population: History Pyotr Beketov's Cossacks founded Chita in 1653. The name of the settlement came from the local River Chita. Following the Decembrist revolt of 1825, from 1827 several of the Decembrists suffered exile to Chita. According to George Kennan, who visited the area in the 1880s, "Among the exiles in Chita were some of the brightest, most cultivated, most sympathetic men and women that we had met in Eastern Siberia." When Richard Maack visited the city in 1855, he saw a wooden town, with one church, also wooden. He estimated Chita's population at under 1,000, but predicted that the city would soon experience fast growth, due to the upcoming annexation of the Amur valley by Russia.
