Serge Laget (game Designer)
Serge Charles Jean Laget (13 February 1959 – 23 January 2023) was a French board game designer. He also worked as an education advisor near Avignon. Biography Serge Laget and Alain Munoz designed the game ''Le Gang des Traction-Avant'' from International Team, and they were awarded the Pion d'Or 84 for the game. In 2003, Laget created the board game ''Mare Nostrum'', and its successor, ''Mare Nostrum: Mythology Expansion'', two years later. In 2011, he created ''Cargo Noir'' and, in 2020, ''Nidavellir''. Serge Laget died in January 2023, at the age of 63. Oloron-Sainte-Marie
Oloron-Sainte-Marie (; ; ) is a commune in the southwestern French department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. History The town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century, then known as ''Illoronensium''. Situated on the Roman way between the important towns of Dax and Saragossa, its position was strategic. Today known as Saint-Grat, Gratus of Oloron became in 506 the first known archbishop of the Ancient Diocese of Oloron then known as "Iluro". Mare Nostrum is a board game for 3 to 5 players, designed by Serge Laget and published in 2003 by Eurogames. It was also the name of a 1983 board game in the Fronte Mare series. Gameplay Players assume the roles of one of five Mediterranean empires - Rome, Greece, Babylon, Egypt or Carthage. Units are placed on a game board representing the Mediterranean and the surrounding area, divided into provinces which contain one or more resources. Players take turns in rounds of three phases: ;Commerce Phase :Players receive cards for each resource they control. Once the players have taken their resources, the player who controls most caravans and markets (the ''Director of Commerce'') chooses how many cards will be traded, and each player puts down that many resource cards from their hand. Bruno Faidutti (born 23 October 1961) is a historian and sociologist, living in France, who is best known as a board game designer. Early life and education Bruno Faidutti studied law, economics, and sociology, eventually earning a doctorate in history by writing about the scientific debate in the Renaissance on the reality of the unicorn. His favorite authors are Thomas Pynchon, James Joyce, Marcel Proust, Salman Rushdie, and Umberto Eco, his favorite movie, Andrei Tarkovsky's '' Andrei Roublev''. He came into the world of hobby gaming through ''Cosmic Encounter'' and roleplaying games, and was one of the first French ''Dungeons & Dragons'' players. ''Mystery of the Abbey'' is a board game designed by Bruno Faidutti, illustrated by Julien Delval, Emanuel Roudier and Cyrille Daujean as graphic designer. Originally published in French by MultiSim in 1998 under the name ''Meurtre à l'Abbaye'' (Murder at the Abbey), Faidutti's game was republished as ''Mystery of the Abbey'' by Days of Wonder with new graphic design in 2003. In ''Mystery of the Abbey'', each player plays the role of a monk seeking to solve a murder in an abbey along the lines of the 1980 novel ''The Name of the Rose''.
