Serapion C. Torre
Serapion Cuartel Torre (November 14, 1892 – December 17, 1941) was a Filipino litterateur, poet, novelist, zarzuela writer, and playwright of the Hiligaynon language. He is widely known as the "Father of Modern Hiligaynon Literature". Some of his popular works are ''Sayup nga Ikamatay'' (1915) and ''Dagta nga Makatinlo'' (1919) for zarzuelas, and ''Bus-og nga Bulawan'' (1928) and ''Mater Dolorosa'' (1931) for novels. He also served as Municipal President of Iloilo from 1923 to 1925. The plaza of Mandurriao was named in his honor by virtue of Republic Act No. 1023, approved on June 12, 1954. Early life and career Torre was born on November 14, 1892, in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, to Victorino Torre and Isabel Cuartel. Hiligaynon People
The Hiligaynon people (), often referred to as Ilonggo people () or Panayan people (), are the second largest subgroup of the larger Bisaya people, Visayan Ethnic groups in the Philippines, ethnic group, whose primary language is Hiligaynon language, Hiligaynon, an Austronesian language of the Visayan languages, Visayan branch native to Panay, Guimaras, and Negros island, Negros. They originated in the province of Iloilo, on the island of Panay, in the region of Western Visayas. ''Balagtasan'' is a Filipino form of debate done in verse. Derived from the name of Francisco Balagtas also known as the Prince of Balagtasan, this art presents a type of literature in which thoughts or reasoning are expressed through speech. The first balagtasan took place in the Philippines on April 6, 1924, created by groups of writers to commemorate the birth of Francisco Balagtas. They made the first balagtasan with three sets of poets presenting a scripted defense. They based the form on earlier types of debates that also used poetic elements such as ''karagatan'', ''huwego de prenda'' and, ''duplo''. Balagtasan is participated by two or more protagonists who engages in a debate on a selected subject. Each protagonist expresses their views in verse and with rhyming. Mariveles, officially the Municipality of Mariveles (), is a municipality of the Philippines, municipality in the Philippine Province, province of Bataan, Philippines.
