Seppo Westerlund
Seppo Assar Kustaa Westerlund (2 November 1930 – 22 February 2014) was a Finnish engineer and politician, born in Oulu. He began his political career in the Liberal League. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1970 to 1979, representing the Liberal People's Party (LKP). He served as Minister of Defence from 29 September 1976 to 15 May 1977. He was a presidential elector in the 1978 Finnish presidential election Two-stage presidential elections were held in Finland in 1978. Liberal League (Finland)
Liberal League (, VL; ) was a Finnish liberal political party. VL existed from 1951 until 1965. The party was founded in spring 1951 by the minority of National Progressive Party, led by Helsinki group, as the party finished its existence. Most of the former Progressive party members joined the People's Party of Finland. VL included among others MP Rolf B. Berner, minister Teuvo Aura and the director of the Bank of Finland and once PM, Sakari Tuomioja. VL was heir to National Progressive Party seat in the Liberal International – People's Party was not accepted into the International as a result. VL proposed Sakari Tuomioja as candidate for 1956 presidential elections. He was also supported by National Coalition Party. 1978 Finnish Presidential Election
Two-stage presidential elections were held in Finland in 1978. The electors, in turn assembled in Helsinki on 15 February to formally elect the President. Urho Kekkonen, president since 1956, was re-elected on the first ballot by the electors. Kekkonen had agreed to become the Social Democratic presidential candidate in April 1975, and after that all the major Finnish political parties chose him as their candidate.
