Sentenced
Sentenced was a Finnish gothic metal band that played melodic death metal in their early years. The band formed in 1989 in the town of Muhos and broke up in 2005. History Early years (1988–1991) Sentenced started in 1988 as Deformity and changed their name to Sentenced in 1989, after a few line-up changes. The original line-up consisted of Miika Tenkula (lead guitar and vocals), Sami Lopakka (guitar), Vesa Ranta (drums), and Lari Kylmänen (bass). They recorded two demo tapes: ''When Death Joins Us...'' in 1990 and ''Rotting Ways to Misery'' in 1991. The band actually got their very first record deal (with the French label Thrash Records) after their first demo. ''Shadows of the Past'' (1991–1993) In 1991, bassist Taneli Jarva joined the band, replacing Kylmänen just as the band was about to record their debut album, '' Shadows of the Past''. At that time, their musical style was fast, typical European death metal. In Spring 1992, they recorded a three-song promoti ... North From Here
''North from Here'' is the second album by the Finnish metal band Sentenced. Lyrics of the album deal with Sentenced's typical melancholy, but some also deal with the mythology and history of Finnish warfare and the national romantic epic of ''Kalevala''. Prior the release of ''North From Here'' the band had developed their playing skills further and established a more personal sound, drawing influence from a number of extreme metal bands including Atheist, Nocturnus, Bathory and the early works of Darkthrone (namely the band's death metal debut, '' Soulside Journey''), but on the opposite spectrum, also more rock-oriented acts such as Faith No More and Primus. Amok (Sentenced Album)
''Amok'' is the third album by the Finnish metal band Sentenced, released through Century Media in 1995. Though still mostly rooted in the death metal genre, the album takes the melodic death metal direction of 1993's ''North from Here'' a step further with elements of traditional heavy metal and doom metal, along with elements of the goth rock-inspired style that the band would take on with subsequent releases, following bassist/vocalist Taneli Jarva's departure. The lyrics are a mixture of melancholy, mythology and suicidal themes. An episode of the TV series ''Home Improvement'' had the character Mark (played by Taran Noah Smith) wearing a T-shirt that featured the album. Track listing Personnel *Taneli Jarva – vocals, bass, keyboards *Miika Tenkula – guitar, keyboards *Sami Lopakka – guitars, keyboards *Vesa Ranta Vesa Ranta (born 20 July 1973) is a Finnish drummer. Shadows Of The Past (album)
''Shadows of the Past'' is the debut album by the Finnish metal band Sentenced. It was released in 1991 and reissued by Century Media in 1995, including the ''Journey to Pohjola'' demo. It was reissued again in 2001 with ''North from Here'' and again in 2008 as a two-CD set along with their first two demos. ''Shadows of the Past'' features more prominent death metal elements than would be present later in their career. On the introduction speech of ''North from Here'' 2008 re-release, Jarva states that at the time of ''Shadows of the Past'' the band was just a "Death clone" amongst others, so the band chose to pursue a more technical and personal-sounding direction on their second album. The album has had three different covers: the original release drawn by Luxi Lahtinen, the Century Media 1995 reissue drawn by Taneli Jarva, and the 2008 reissue which is a reproduction of a medieval woodcut print. This version also includes an insert featuring the first two covers. Track list ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
