Seneca State Forest
Seneca State Forest is a state forest located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Created in 1924, it is the oldest state forest in West Virginia. It is also West Virginia's second-largest state forest at . The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources rents eight fully equipped pioneer cabins. As of 2013, the Thorny Mountain Fire Tower is also being renovated and will be available for overnight rentals. Public hunting and fishing are available in the forest. Visitors can boat on the Seneca Lake. The forest contains a section of the Allegheny Trail and other trails and is near the Greenbrier River Trail. A Civilian Conservation Corps camp was once located near the current Seneca State Forest office. Pocahontas County, West Virginia
Pocahontas County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,869. Its county seat is Marlinton. The county was established in 1821. It is named after the daughter of the Powhatan chief of the Native Americans in the United States from Jamestown, Virginia. She married an English settler and their children became ancestors of many of the First Families of Virginia. Pocahontas County is the home to the Green Bank Observatory and is part of the National Radio Quiet Zone. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of West Virginia. While formerly known as the cabinet-level Department of Natural Resources, it is now part of the West Virginia Department of Commerce. Allegheny Trail
The Allegheny Trail is a hiking trail that passes through the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia, United States. It is the longest named trail in the state excepting the Appalachian Trail, of which traverses the state at Harper's Ferry. The trail is not yet complete, and substantial sections are still on roads. Greenbrier River Trail
The Greenbrier River Trail (GRT), is a lineal state park comprising a rail trail between North Caldwell and Cass in eastern West Virginia. The GRT route and its contours were originally engineered by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, serving as a passenger and freight line before becoming unviable after the Great Depression. The right of way was gifted to the State of West Virginia in the late 1970s and the former railbed reopened in 1980 as a recreational multi-use trail. The wheelchair-accessible trail features a hard-packed crushed-limestone surface accommodating hiking, bicycling, ski-touring and horseback-riding. Access is provided at 14 trailheads. Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary government work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. The CCC was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that supplied manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to supply jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States Robert Fechner was the first director of this agency, succeeded by James McEntee following Fechner's death.
