Sendero Los Quetzales
''Sendero'' ('Path') was a Spanish-language newspaper in Paraguay, published by the Paraguayan Episcopal Conference (CEP). Initially it was a fortnightly and was later converted into a weekly newspaper. History The first issue of ''Sendero'' was published in July 1973. The previous press organ of CEP, ''Comunidad'' had been shut down in 1969 after persistent repression and harassment from the Alfredo Stroessner government. During the period 1969–1973 the only organ of the Catholic Church had been an internal 'Information Bulletine' circulated within parishes but without possibility of distribution through news-kiosks. The Paraguayan Episcopal Conference (Spanish language, Spanish: Conferencia Episcopal Paraguaya, CEP) is an agency of the Catholic Church which gathers the bishops of Paraguay. Alfredo Stroessner Matiauda (; 3 November 1912 – 16 August 2006) was a Paraguayan politician, army general and Military dictatorship, military dictator who ruled as the 42nd president of Paraguay from 15 August 1954 until his overthrow in 1989. The Catholic Church in Paraguay is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. In 2018, there were around 5.7 million Catholics in Paraguay - approximately 88.3% of the total population. The country is divided into twelve dioceses including one archdiocese, the Archdiocese of Asunción. Its mother church is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Asunción. In 2023, there were 900 priests and over 1,000 nuns serving 422 parishes. The evangelization of Paraguay began in 1542. The first diocese was erected in 1547, though not occupied until 1556.
