Senckenberg German Entomological Institute
The Senckenberg German Entomological Institute (; SDEI or DEI) is a German entomological research institute devoted to the study of insects. Founded in 1886, the institute has an extraordinary insect collection and a world-class entomological library. Since 2009, the SDEI has been part of the Senckenberg Nature Research Society. Axel Leonard Melander (3 June 187814 August 1962) was an American entomologist specialising in Diptera and Hymenoptera. Specimens collected by Melander are held at the German Entomological Institute and the National Museum of Natural History. Educational career He received his BS degree in 1901 and his MS degree on 11 June 1902 from the University of Texas at Austin and his ScD degree from Harvard University in 1914. Karl Wilhelm Letzner
Karl Wilhelm Letzner (13 June 1812 – 15 December 1889) was a Silesian high school teacher and entomologist. He has been considered a pioneer of Silesian entomology and he documented the beetle fauna of south-western Poland. Biography Letzner was born in Grabitz (Gajowice, today part of Wrocław) in the family of a tailor. He went to school at Grabitz and Graebschen and on the recommendation of the school inspector he was given free schooling at the Morgenbesser Latin School which later became the Realgymnasium zum heiligen Geist. He excelled and was made first decurio in 1826 and began to work as an assistant to the blind teacher Johann Georg Knie who was producing a directory of places in Silesia. He became especially interested in botany under the teacher Christian Scholz. Friedrich Wilhelm Konow
Friedrich Wilhelm Konow (11 July 1842, in Mechow – 18 March 1908, in Teschendorf) was a German priest and amateur entomologist who specialised in Hymenoptera especially Tenthredinidae. Konow was born in Mechow where he attended the school where his father worked. He then studied at Fürstenhagen and from 1857 at the Realschule followed by Gymnasium Carolinum in Neustrelitz. He studied theology from 1865 at Rostock and Erlangen and then worked as a private tutor near Oyle near Nienburg. He then became a preacher in Damshagen, followed by service in Gülz and Tessin. He then became a teacher at a girls' school in Schwerin. He was ordained in 1878 and became a pastor at Fürstenberg in Mecklenburg-Strehlitz. In 1892 he was at Teschendorf. He studyied entomology in his spare time and collected specimens from all groups of insects other than Lepidoptera. Later he specialized on the Hymenoptera.
