Hubert Humphrey
Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr. (May 27, 1911 – January 13, 1978) was an American politician who served from 1965 to 1969 as the 38th vice president of the United States. He twice served in the United States Senate, representing Minnesota from 1949 to 1964 and from 1971 to 1978. As a senator, he was a major leader of modern liberalism in the United States. As President Lyndon B. Johnson's vice president, he supported the controversial Vietnam War. An intensely divided Democratic Party nominated him in the 1968 presidential election, which he lost to Republican nominee Richard Nixon. Born in Wallace, South Dakota, Humphrey attended the University of Minnesota. Friend Humphrey (March 8, 1787 – March 15, 1854) was an American merchant, Whig state Senator from New York, and Mayor of Albany from 1849 to 1850. Early life He was born in Simsbury, Connecticut on March 8, 1787. He was one of the sons of Noah Humphrey Jr. (1726–) and Margaret ( Phelps) Humphrey (–). His brother was General Chauncey Humphrey. Career In 1811, he moved to Albany, New York, where he engaged in the leather trade, under the name Friend Humphrey's Son of Albany. He was a Whig member of the New York State Senate (3rd D.) in 1840 and 1841. He was elected as Mayor of Albany from 1843 to 1845, and from 1849 to 1850. As mayor, he was known for the advancement of learning and "sound morals" by closing the markets on Sunday. Personal life Humphrey married Hannah Hinman (1792–1822), a daughter of Dr. Aaron B. John Humphrey (Illinois Politician)
John Humphrey (June 20, 1838 – October 3, 1914) was an English American politician and attorney who is credited as the father of Orland Park, Illinois. He was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate. He was also the first mayor of Orland Park. Biography John Humphrey was born in Wisbech, England on June 20, 1838. He came with his family to the United States in 1848. They were among the first settlers to arrive in what would become Orland Park, Illinois. During his youth, he helped his family on the farm while attending public schools. When Humphrey was twenty-one, he joined a wagon train headed to California. After working there a few years, he returned to his family in Illinois. Humphrey married Amelia Patrick in 1863. In 1866, he was elected to the Cook County Board of Supervisors. Reuben Humphrey
Reuben Humphrey (September 2, 1757 – August 12, 1831) was a United States representative from New York. Born in West Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut on September 2, 1757, he completed preparatory studies and enlisted as a private in the Connecticut Militia for the Revolutionary War. He took part in several actions, including the Battle of Long Island, and received his commission as an officer. Humphrey continued his military service after the Revolution and was discharged as a major in 1796. He held several local offices, including serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1779, 1791 and 1793. He was Keeper of Newgate State Prison in Simsbury, Connecticut for five years. Humphrey moved to Onondaga County, New York in 1801, and farmed in Marcellus and Onondaga. He was First Judge of Onondaga County from 1804 to 1807, and Town Supervisor of Onondaga in 1805.
