John Greenlees Semple (10 June 1904 in Belfast, Ireland – 23 October 1985 in London, England) was a British mathematician working in algebraic geometry. Academic Career He attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, and then received an undergraduate degree from Queen's University, Belfast, graduating in 1925 with First Class honours in mathematics. After this he went to Cambridge where he sat the Mathematical Tripos of 1927, gaining a distinction, and went on to study for a doctorate at St John's College, Cambridge, where he was taught by H. F. Baker, which was awarded in 1930. He won the Rayleigh Prize in 1929, and became a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh for a year. He was briefly elected a fellow of St John's College, before taking the position of Chair of Pure Mathematics at Queen's University, Belfast in 1930. Ellen Churchill Semple (January 8, 1863 – May 8, 1932) was an American geographer and the first female president of the Association of American Geographers. She contributed significantly to the early development of the discipline of geography in the United States, particularly studies of human geography. She is most closely associated with work in anthropogeography and environmentalism, and the debate about " environmental determinism". Lieutenant-Colonel Sir David Semple (6 April 1856 – 7 January 1937) was a British Army officer who founded the Pasteur Institute at Kasauli in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The institute later came to be known as the Central Research Institute (CRI). Semple was born in Derry, the son of William Semple of Castlederg, County Tyrone. He was educated at Foyle College and earned his MD and MCh degrees at Queen's University Belfast, followed by his Public Health degree from Cambridge in 1892. In 1911, he developed a nerve-tissue based rabies vaccine from the brains of sheep first made rabid and then killed. The 'Semple' vaccine however is known to have side-effects such as paralysis with high risk of other diseases, being just a crude form of churned brain-tissue. He is Professor of Child Health and Outbreak Medicine at the University of Liverpool and a consultant respiratory paediatrician at Alder Hey Children's Hospital Liverpool. Semple was an undergraduate medical student the Middlesex Hospital Medical School when he met Richard Tedder at the hospital Burns supper, both playing their bagpipes. Thomas Semple (8 April 1879 – 11 April 1943) was an Irish hurler who played as a half-forward for the Tipperary senior team. He began his career with the team during the 1897 championship and became a regular starter until his retirement following the 1909 championship. Over his tenure, he secured three All-Ireland medals and four Munster medals. Having been an All-Ireland runner-up once, Semple led the team to All-Ireland victories in 1906 and 1908. At club level Semple was a six-time county club championship medalist with Thurles.
