Selma, Alabama
Selma is a city in and the county seat of Dallas County, in the Black Belt region of south central Alabama and extending to the west. Located on the banks of the Alabama River, the city has a population of 17,971 as of the 2020 census. About 80% of the population is African-American. Selma was a trading center and market town during the antebellum years of King Cotton in the South. It was also an important armaments-manufacturing and iron shipbuilding center for the Confederacy, as well as providing a hospital converted from a Masonic university, during the Civil War, surrounded by miles of earthen fortifications. The Confederate forces were defeated during the Battle of Selma, in the final full month of the war. In modern times, the city is best known for the 1960s civil rights movement and the Selma to Montgomery marches, beginning with "Bloody Sunday" in March 1965, when unarmed peaceful protesters were assaulted by County and state highway police. Selma (lake Monster)
In Scandinavian folklore, Norwegian folklore, Selma (, "Seljord serpent") is a legendary sea serpent said to live in the Seljordsvatnet, Lake Seljord () in Seljord, Telemark, Norway. The sea serpent Selma has been depicted in the coat of arms of Seljord since 1989. Designed by sculpturer, Trygve Magnus Barstad, the arms show Selma in a gold-color on a red background. The sea serpent has been discussed for a long time and there have been witness descriptions of encounters, especially on hot, quiet summers. The oldest written account of the creature dates from 1750, when it was said to have rounded a rowboat belonging to a man from Bø, Telemark, Bø rowing across from Ulvenes to Nes. Selma is a rock ballad recorded in former Yugoslavia by the influential Bosnian rock band Bijelo Dugme. This song appeared for the first time on their 1974 debut album '' Kad bi bio bijelo dugme''. Background "Selma" is a song about a young girl traveling to university. The narrator is saying goodbye to her but is unable to express his feelings for her. All he can say is goodbye and please do not lean out of the train window. The text of the song was written by Vlado Dijak, a former Yugoslav poet and songwriter, based on a real event in 1949, when he accompanied Selma Borić, the young Zenica-born girl in which he was secretly in love with, to the train station in Sarajevo. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches which were initiated and directed by James Bevel and led by Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, and John Lewis. The film stars actors David Oyelowo as King, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Tim Roth as George Wallace, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, and Common as James Bevel. Selma is a historic property and former plantation in Loudoun County, Virginia, near Leesburg. Selma is best known as the residence of Armistead Thomson Mason (4 August 1787–6 February 1819), a U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1816 through 1817. History The lands of Selma were once a part of the Northern Neck Proprietary owned by Lord Fairfax, and Selma was a part of the tract bought around 1741 by Stevens Thomson Mason. Selma was built at the base of Catoctin Mountain overlooking a sweeping vista of lawn and pastureland between 1800 and 1810 by Armistead Thomson Mason. Mason came to be known as the "Chief of Selma." Due to a political quarrel between Mason and his cousin Colonel John Mason McCarty, he and McCarty dueled at the Bladensburg dueling grounds in Bladensburg on 6 February 1819. The original section of the manor house was built about 1785, and was a two-story, three-bay with a side-passage and single pile plan topped with a gambrel roof.
