Selma Emiroğlu
Selma Emiroğlu Aykan (17 May 1928 – 4 October 2011) was the first female cartoonist in Turkey. She was also an opera singer. Life She was born in Istanbul on 17 May 1928. She studied Üsküdar American Academy, but before graduation, she left the school and entered the Conservatoire of Istanbul Municipality. In 1963, she married Aydın Aykan and moved to Berlin, West Germany. She gave birth to a daughter named Aylin. She died on 4 October 2011 in Tutzing, Germany. Cartoonist career During her childhood, she was fond of drawing. Her mother sent some of her drawings to Cemal Nadir Güler, a renowned cartoonist of the 1940s. Her first cartoon appeared on the ''Amcabey'' periodical of Güler as early as 1943. When ''Doğan Kardeş'', the children's periodical began to be published by Kâzım Taşkent, the founder of Jawaharlal Nehru, Yapı Kredi Bank, she began drawing for the publication. Jawaharlal Nehru
Jawaharlal Nehru (14 November 1889 – 27 May 1964) was an Indian anti-colonial nationalist, secular humanist, social democrat, and statesman who was a central figure in India during the middle of the 20th century. Doğan Kardeş
Doğan Kardeş (literally 'Brother Doğan') was the name of a publishing company and a periodical for children in Turkey. The periodical and the company were named after Doğa, a 10-year-old boy studying in a school in Flims, Switzerland. He died during an avalanche on 10 April 1939. His father, Kâzım Taşkent, who was the founder of Yapı ve Kredi Bankası established a publishing company to commemorate his son. ''Doğan Kardeş'' Periodical The publishing company began publishing a periodical for the children named ''Doğan Kardeş Dergisi'' under the editorship of Vedat Nedim Tör. The periodical was published in three distinct periods. The first period was between April 1945 and July 1978 (1174 issues). Cemal Nadir Güler
Cemal Nadir (13 July 1902 – 27 February 1947) was a Turkish people, Turkish cartoonist. Güler is the surname he assumed after the Surname Law of 1934. Biography Cemal Nadir was born in Bursa, Ottoman Empire on 13 July 1902. His father Şevket was a calligraphy, calligraphist () employed in courts. He completed the primary school in Bursa, and the junior high school in Bilecik. In 1923, he married Melahat (Güler). Cemal Nadir Güler died on 27 February 1947 due to bacteremia. He was buried at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery in Istanbul. Career After finishing high school, he began working as a sign painting, sign painter in Bursa. He also created cartoons, and his first cartoon appeared in ''Diken (magazine), Diken'' (literally: "The Thorn") periodical. Although he moved to İstanbul and tried to be a full-time cartoonist, he could not make it and he returned to Bursa.
