The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (), popularly abbreviated as BNP (), is a major List of political parties in Bangladesh, political party in Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by President of Bangladesh, President Ziaur Rahman, with a view of uniting people with a Bangladeshi nationalism, nationalist ideology. Later, the BNP emerged as one of the two traditionally dominant parties in Bangladesh, along with it's rival, the Awami League. Known as the "Party of the Freedom Fighters of the Battlefield" during it's establishment, the BNP was founded by Ziaur Rahman after the presidential election of 1978 and remained in its leadership until his Assassination of Ziaur Rahman, assassination in 1981. Following Rahman's assassination, his widow, Khaleda Zia, took over leadership of the party and presided as chairperson until her imprisonment, in 2018. Shahidul Islam (academic)
Shahidul Islam is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and a two term member of parliament for Kushtia-2 from 1996 to 2006. He was known for filing cases and attacking journalists in Kushtia District. Career In 1981/6, Islam was removed from Bheramara College as lecturer after an investigation by the Deputy Commissioner found his high school certificate to be forged. In the 1980s, he joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. In 1991, he tried to get the Bangladesh Nationalist Party nomination for Kushtia-2 but failed. He got his wife, Selina Shahid, elected to parliament from a Bangladesh Nationalist Party women's reserved seat. Islam was elected to parliament from Kushtia-2 as a candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the February 1996 Bangladeshi general election which was boycotted by all other political parties.
