Selina Leem
Selina Neirok Leem is a climate change activist and spoken word performer from the Marshall Islands. She was the youngest speaker at COP21 and has also spoken at COP26, making a "passionate plea" to world leaders for increased action on addressing climate change. Selina just recently became a TED speaker at the 2021 TED countdown summit. Early life Leem was born and raised in Majuro, the capital city of the Marshall Islands. At the age of 16, she moved to Germany to finish high school at the Robert Bosch United World College, UWC Robert Bosch College. She learned about climate change from stories her grandfather told her, who spoke about the impacts of a Sea level rise, rising ocean to their home islands. Her concerns over global warming motivated her studies into the science of climate change in school. While at UWC, Selina developed into a powerful public speaker. Majuro
Majuro (; Marshallese language, Marshallese: ' ) is the Capital city, capital and largest city of the Marshall Islands. It is also a large coral atoll of 64 islands in the Pacific Ocean. It forms a legislative district of the Ratak Chain, Ratak (Sunrise) Chain of the Marshall Islands. The atoll has a land area of and encloses a lagoon of . As with other atolls in the Marshall Islands, Majuro consists of narrow land masses. It has a tropical trade wind climate, with an average temperature of . Majuro has been inhabited by humans for at least 2,000 years and was first settled by the Austronesian peoples, Austronesian ancestors of the modern day Marshallese people. Tony DeBrum
Tony deBrum (also Anton deBrum) (26 February 1945 – 22 August 2017) was a Marshallese politician and government minister. His cabinet posts included Minister in Assistance to the President of Marshall Islands, Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Education. Life and career DeBrum was born in Tuvalu as the Pacific War was nearing its conclusion. The family later moved to Likiep Atoll. His father was a manager at Marshall Islands International Airport, while his mother was a teacher. One formative experience for him as a child was witnessing the fallout from nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll. He witnessed the sky turn "blood red" when out fishing with his grandfather as a nine-year-old boy. For that reason, he was outspoken about the issues of nuclear testing and led a lifelong campaign for nuclear disarmament.
