''Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia'' is the third album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. It is considered to be the first album in the group's discography to have their signature sound which was achieved by using low fidelity recording techniques. It is the only album to feature drummer Bruce Smith. Background After the group's previous releases failed commercially, the band's budget towards production began to shrink considerably. 500 original copies were pressed that were funded by the band, similar to previous releases. Guided by Voices is an American indie rock band formed in 1983 in Dayton, Ohio. It has made frequent personnel changes but always maintained the presence of principal songwriter Robert Pollard. Lo-fi (also typeset as lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) is a music or production quality in which elements usually regarded as imperfections in the context of a recording or performance are present, sometimes as a deliberate stylistic choice. ''Sandbox'' is the second studio album from American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Reception Editors at AllMusic rated this album 2 out of 5 stars, with critic Brian Egan writing that the band "took a short step back" from their previous album and that the songs "ultimately fail to register". Byron Coley of ''Spin'' pointed to the work on ''Sandbox'' to declare that Guided by Voices is "one of the sharpest sounding angle-pop bands out of the Midwest since the days of Green". Kevin Fennell
Kevin Fennell (born March 13, 1959) is an American musician from Dayton, Ohio best known as the original drummer for the indie rock band Guided by Voices. Career Fennell joined the original trio composition of the group, He performed with the band between 1983 and 1996, and since the reunion of the "Classic Lineup" in 2010. He appeared to perform at the band's "final" Dayton, OH performance in 2004. He did not, however, appear at their final concert overall in Chicago in December 2004. Fennell has also performed drums on Tobin Sprout's first two solo albums. Fennell rejoined the revived band in 2010 for a reunion tour and later album releases ''Let's Go Eat the Factory'' and '' Class Clown Spots a UFO''.
