This is a list of playable and boss characters from the ''Mortal Kombat'' fighting game franchise and the games in which they appear. Created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, the series depicts conflicts between various realms. Most characters fight on behalf of their realm, with the primary heroes defending Earthrealm against conquering villains from Outworld and the Netherrealm. Early installments feature the characters participating in the eponymous Mortal Kombat tournament to decide their realm's fate. In later installments, Earthrealm is often invaded by force. A total of 77 playable fighters have been featured in the series, in addition to unplayable bosses and guest characters. Much of the franchise's mainstays were introduced during the first three games. Nearly all of the characters have been killed at a point in the story, but have rarely stayed dead. ''Mortal Kombat 1'' is a 2023 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. It is the twelfth main installment in the ''Mortal Kombat'' series, and serves as its second Reboot (fiction), reboot after 2011's ''Mortal Kombat (2011 video game), Mortal Kombat''. The game takes place after the events of 2019's ''Mortal Kombat 11'', and is set in a new timeline (the third main timeline in the series' history) created by Liu Kang during his ending in ''11''s ''Aftermath'' expansion. In this new timeline, Liu Kang assembles a clique of fighters to participate in the latest Mortal Kombat tournament in Outworld while contending with an alliance formed by Titan Shang Tsung. In the follow-up expansion, ''Khaos Reigns'', Liu Kang and his allies must contend with Titan Havik. ''Mortal Kombat 11'' is a 2019 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is the eleventh main installment in the ''Mortal Kombat'' series and a sequel to '' Mortal Kombat X'' (2015). The game was announced at The Game Awards 2018 and was released in North America and Europe on April 23, 2019, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One—with the exception of Europe's Switch version which was released on May 10, 2019. It was released on Stadia on November 19, 2019. Upon release, the console versions of ''Mortal Kombat 11'' received generally favorable reviews, which praised the gameplay, story, graphics, and improved netcode, but it received criticism for the presence of microtransactions and over-reliance on grinding. Deadly Alliance
''Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance'' is a 2002 fighting game developed and published by Midway for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 (PS2), GameCube, and Game Boy Advance (GBA). It was the first all-new ''Mortal Kombat'' (MK) fighting game produced exclusively for home consoles, with no preceding arcade release. It is the fifth main installment in the ''Mortal Kombat'' franchise and a sequel to 1997's ''Mortal Kombat 4''. Its story focuses on the eponymous alliance between sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung and their schemes to revive an ancient army to conquer Outworld and Earthrealm. The game is the only main installment not to feature series protagonist Liu Kang as a playable character. It is also the first game in the canon series to not have the involvement of co-creator John Tobias, as he left Midway in 1999 to pursue other interests. Mortal Kombat Trilogy
''Mortal Kombat Trilogy'' is a fighting game released by Midway Games, Midway in 1996 as the second and final update to ''Mortal Kombat 3'' (the first being ''Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3'') for the PlayStation (console), PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and Personal computer, PCs. Further versions were also released for the Game.com and R-Zone. It features a similar basic gameplay system and the same story as ''Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3'', but adds characters and stages restored from ''Mortal Kombat (1992 video game), Mortal Kombat'' and ''Mortal Kombat II''. New additions to the game included the "Aggressor" bar. The Brutality (Mortal Kombat), Brutality mechanic was introduced with this installment.
