Seiei Toyama
Seiei Toyama is a Japanese environmentalist and the recipient of the 2003 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding, recognizing his two-decade-long effort to combat desertification in China, carried out in a spirit of solidarity and peace. Toyama was born in Shinkura, Mizuho Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi, Minamitsuru County, Yamanashi Prefecture (now part of Shin-Kurashiki Station, Shinkura, Fujiyoshida City). He studied at Yamanashi Prefecture, Yamanashi Prefectural Hikawa Junior High School (now Yamanashi Prefectural Hikawa High School) and later graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University, Kyoto Imperial University. Reforestation is the practice of restoring previously existing forests and woodlands that have been destroyed or damaged. The prior forest destruction might have happened through deforestation, clearcutting or wildfires. Three important purposes of reforestation programs are for harvesting of wood, for climate change mitigation, and for ecosystem and habitat restoration purposes. The Kubuqi Desert () is a desert within the Ordos Basin in northwestern China, under the administration of the Inner Mongolian prefecture of Ordos City.
