Sehestedt
Sehestedt () is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Sehestedt is south of the municipality of Groß Wittensee, Haby or Holtsee, but north of Bovenau, and west of Lindau. It is divided into two parts by the Kiel Canal, which has to be crossed by a ferry. Battle Of Sehested
The Battle of Sehested was fought on 10 December 1813 during the Dano-Swedish War of 1813–1814 between a Danish army under Prince Frederik of Hesse and a Coalition force led by Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn. Near Sehested, Holstein, Frederik's troops defeated the Coalition army, inflicting over 1,100 casualties on von Wallmoden-Gimborn's force while suffering only 500. However, this victory did not prevent the Coalition from emerging victorious in the conflict in 1814. Background Denmark-Norway found itself involved in the Napoleonic Wars following the Battle of Copenhagen in 1807. To prevent the Dano-Norwegian navy from falling into French hands, British forces attacked and briefly occupied Copenhagen, capturing most of the Dano-Norwegian fleet at anchor. Rendsburg-Eckernförde
Rendsburg-Eckernförde (; ) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the east and clockwise) the city of Kiel, the district of Plön, the city of Neumünster, the districts of Segeberg, Steinburg, Dithmarschen and Schleswig-Flensburg, and the Baltic Sea. History In 1867 the Prussian administration established twenty districts in its province of Schleswig-Holstein, among them the districts of Rendsburg and Eckernförde. Bovenau
Bovenau is a village in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Bovenau is only above sea level. The location is south of the municipality of Bünsdorf or Sehestedt, but north of Ostenfeld, Bredenbek, and west of Krummwisch, about away from the center of Kiel. History Bovenau was first mentioned in 1240 as Kirchdorf. The name is derived from the Low German „boven de Au“, which means something like "above the creek". Several megalithic tombs have been found in the area of the settlement. Estates are located in the surrounding area: Gut Dengelsberg, Gut Georgenthal, Gut Kluvensiek, Gut Osterrade, Gut Steinwehr. Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal (, until 1948 called in German the ) is a fresh water canal that links the North Sea () to the Baltic Sea ().
