Neuhardenberg
Neuhardenberg is a municipality in the district Märkisch-Oderland, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is the site of Neuhardenberg Palace, residence of the Prussian statesman Prince Karl August von Hardenberg (1750-1822). The municipal area comprises the villages of Altfriedland, Quappendorf and Wulkow. Neuhardenberg is part of the ''Amt'' ("collective municipality") Seelow-Land. Names of the place The oldest record mentioning the place, then named ''Quilicz'', dates back to 1348. Later the spelling was changed into ''Quilitz''. When in 1814 Karl August von Hardenberg received the manor, he renamed the place right away into ''Neu-Hardenberg''. On Labour Day, 1 May 1949, the precursors of German Democratic Republic renamed it ''Marxwalde'' after Karl Marx. This was reversed on January 1, 1991. Märkisch-Oderland
Märkisch-Oderland is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the eastern part of Brandenburg, Germany. Neighboring are (from the north clockwise) the district Barnim, the country Poland, the district-free city Frankfurt (Oder), the district Oder-Spree and the ''Bundesland'' Berlin. The administrative seat is Seelow but the largest town is Strausberg. Geography The district extends from the outskirts of Berlin in the west to the Oder river and the Polish border in the east. It includes a swampy area along the Oder known as the ''Oderbruch'', about 60 km in length and 17 km in width. The Oderbruch was partially drained and populated in the 18th century. Seelow
Seelow () is a German town, seat of the Märkisch-Oderland, a district of Brandenburg. As of 2013 its population was of 5,464. Geography It is situated in the extreme east of Germany, 70 km (40 miles) east of Berlin, 16 km (10 miles) west of the border with Poland. History The village appears in the records held in 1252 by Archbishop Wilbrand of Magdeburg. At that time, listed as ''Villa Zelou'', it was included in the property of the formerly Polish Bishopric of Lebus (Lubusz Land), contested between the Magdeburg archbishops and the Ascanian margraves of Brandenburg.
