The president of Austria () is the head of state of the Austria, Republic of Austria. The office of the president was established in 1920 by the Constituent National Assembly (Austria), Constituent National Assembly of the First Austrian Republic, first republic following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Habsburg monarchy in Aster Revolution, 1918. As head of state, the president indirectly succeeded the emperor of Austria. The power and role of the presidency has varied drastically over time. The Greens – The Green Alternative
The Greens – The Green Alternative (, ) is a green political party in Austria. The Greens currently sit in opposition. Formerly, they were part of the Schallenberg government, the Second Kurz government, and the Nehammer government. It won 8.2% of votes cast in the 2024 Austrian legislative election. The current President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, is from the Green Party. Karl-Heinz Grasser (born 2 January 1969) is an Austrian businessman and former politician who was the Austrian Finance Minister (2000–2007) under Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel. Grasser is known for his involvement in several corruption scandals during his time as finance minister. In 2020, Grasser was sentenced to 8 years in prison for corruption. In March 2025, the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice upheld the conviction, but reduced the sentence to 4 years in prison. Early career Grasser was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. He studied business administration at the University of Klagenfurt from 1988 to 1992. Elisabeth Gehrer (' Pokorny, born 11 May 1942) is an Austrian politician for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP).
