2017 Algerian Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Algeria on 4 May 2017 to elect all 462 members of the People's National Assembly. The ruling National Liberation Front lost 44 seats, but remained the largest party in the People's National Assembly with 164 members. Electoral system The 462 members of the People's National Assembly are elected by proportional representation from 48 multi-member constituencies based on the provinces. Sabri Boukadoum ( ar, صبري بوقادوم; born 1 September 1958) is an Algerian diplomat who has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs since 31 March 2019. He briefly served as acting Prime Minister of Algeria from 19 to 28 December 2019. He was a member of the Algerian government diplomatic team since 2013. Early life and education Boukadoum was born on 1 September 1958 in Constantine, Algeria. He graduated from the École nationale d'administration — Diplomatic Section. The prime minister of Algeria is the head of government of Algeria. Aymen Benabderrahmane has been the prime minister since 30 June 2021. The prime minister is appointed by the president of Algeria, along with other ministers and members of the government that the new prime minister recommends. The People's National Assembly must approve the legislative program of the new government or the Assembly is dissolved and the prime minister must resign. There are no constitutional limits on a prime minister's term. The longest-serving prime minister was Mohamed Ben Ahmed Abdelghani, who served under President Chadli Bendjedid from 8 March 1979 until 22 January 1984.
