Sebastian Brendel
Sebastian Brendel (; born 12 March 1988) is a German sprint canoeist who has competed since 2007. Brendel is the 2016 Olympic champion in the C-1 1000 metres and C-2 1000 metres events. Career He has won three medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with a silver (C-4 500 m: 2007) and two bronzes (C-1 1000 m: 2009, 2010). He is the current world record holder in the C-1 1000m as of the 2014 ICF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Brendel won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics in canoeing's C-1 1,000 metres event for his country. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, he defended this title successfully and added another one, at the C-2 1000 metres, together with Jan Vandrey. Schwedt
Schwedt (or Schwedt/Oder; ) is a town in Brandenburg, in northeastern Germany. With the official status of a ''Große Kreisstadt, Große kreisangehörige Stadt'' (major district town), it is the largest town of the Uckermark (district), Uckermark district, located near the river Oder, which forms the border with Poland. Overview The formerly agrarian town today has one of the largest oil refinery, oil refineries (''PCK Raffinerie GmbH'') in Germany, established in 1958 and connected to the Russian Druzhba pipeline network. The refinery uses 20 million cubic meters of water per year for the process. A large Pulp and paper industry, paper factory (''UPM (company), UPM'') is located near Schwedt. 2007 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The 2007 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Duisburg, Germany on 9–12 August 2007 for the record-tying fourth time. The German city had hosted the championships previously in 1979, 1987, and 1995. It tied Duisburg with Belgrade, Serbia (then Yugoslavia) who hosted in 1971, 1975, 1978, and 1982. Men race as individuals, pairs and quads over 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m in both Canoe (Canadian) (C) and Kayak (K) events, giving a total of 18 gold medals.
