Math rock is a style of Alternative rock, alternative and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush (band), Rush. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, and extended chords. Post-hardcore
Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term " post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities which had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac who stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period. June of 44 is an American rock band which was formed in 1994 from ex-members of Rodan, Lungfish, Rex, and Hoover. The band's name refers to the period during which writers Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin corresponded. The band toured extensively, reaching as far as Australia. They were a collective from 1994 to 2000, and reunited in 2018. Their style consists of a post-hardcore and math rock base, while their later releases delve into experimental jazz, ambient dub and angular post-punk. Their debut album '' Engine Takes to the Water'' (1995) drew comparisons with both Slint and Will Oldham. The following year's '' Tropics and Meridians'' saw the band compared to Tortoise and The For Carnation. Drummer Doug Scharin had started HiM as a side project, which sometimes also featured bassist Fred Erskine, and Scharin also later started the avant-garde band Out in Worship. Lungfish (band)
Lungfish is an American rock band formed in 1987 in Baltimore, Maryland. All of their music has been released by the Washington, D.C. punk label Dischord, except for their first album. History As of 2005, Lungfish's lineup consisted of Daniel Higgs (vocals, occasional guitar), Asa Osborne (guitar), Sean Meadows (bass), and Mitchell Feldstein (drums). Two previous bass players were John Chriest and Nathan Bell. Related projects Daniel Higgs sang in the 1980s hardcore/punk band Reptile House, and has released numerous solo works under his own name and also Cone of Light. He has recently made numerous solo performances, usually with the long-necked banjo and jaw harp (his recent albums document this as well: 2006's ''Ancestral Songs'' and 2007's ''Metempsychotic Melodies''). HiM (American Band)
HiM is a dub-influenced post-rock group formed in 1995 by Doug Scharin, drummer for the bands Codeine, Rex and June of 44. Their first album, ''Egg'', was their most dub-based effort. Each successive album has gone more in a quasi-world music direction. After some recording for ''Crooklyn Dub Consortium'' and Wordsound, ''Interpretive Belief System'', HiM settled on a lineup of Scharin with Bundy K. Brown, Rob Mazurek and Jeff Parker, members or occasional members of Tortoise and Isotope 217. Their first album was the underground hit ''Sworn Eyes'', produced by Doug Scharin. A few personnel changes followed, and the revamped lineup including members of June of 44. The Sonora Pine
The Sonora Pine was an American indie rock band founded by Tara Jane O'Neil active from 1995 to 1997. History O'Neil formed the band after the breakup of Rodan in 1995, in which she played bass. After moving to New York City, she began working with guitarist Sean Meadows, formerly of Lungfish, and added violinist Samara Lubelski for local shows. They then moved back to Louisville, Kentucky, where Rodan had been based, and added Rodan's drummer, Kevin Coultas, for the recording of their debut album. Pianist Rachel Grimes, of the group Rachel's, made an appearance on this album, which was released by Quarterstick Records in 1996. The Sonora Pineat Allmusic Meadows left the group in 1997, and the group worked as a trio for their sophomore effort, also released on Quarterstick. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''.
