Seamonsters
''Seamonsters'' is the third studio album by English rock band The Wedding Present. It was recorded in ten days in 1991 by American producer Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Albini had previously earlier recorded two EPs with the group; ''Brassneck'' and ''3 Songs'' and, with those records, ''Seamonsters'' has a rougher, harsher sound than the group's earlier two albums. In deliberate contrast to the full sentences featured on previous recordings—something for which the group had often been parodied within the music press—all of the songs on ''Seamonsters'' have one-word titles. The album enjoyed a strongly positive critical reception. Guitarist Peter Solowka was sacked between the recording and release of the album, replaced by Paul Dorrington. Reception ''Rockdelux'' ranked the album the 5th best album of the year on their year-end list. The Wedding Present are an English indie rock group originally formed in 1985 in Leeds, England, from the ashes of The Lost Pandas. The band's music has evolved from fast-paced indie rock in the vein of their most obvious influences The Fall, Buzzcocks and Gang of Four to more varied forms. Throughout their career, they have been led by vocalist and guitarist David Gedge, the band's only constant member. Closely linked to the C86 scene, the band has charted a total of eighteen singles in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, including a historic run of twelve singles – one for each month – in the year of 1992, which tied Elvis Presley's record for most top 40 hits in a single year. Peter Solowka
Peter Solowka or Solovka ( uk, Петро Соловка, , born late 1959 in Oldham) is a musician of Ukrainian and Yugoslavian descent. He has been involved in music since 1985, most notably as guitarist with The Wedding Present from their inception until 1991, and then with The Ukrainians until the present day. The Wedding Present was formed when Peter joined with old school friend David Gedge, Keith Gregory and Shaun Charman. The band released many EPs and singles as well as three successful albums: * ''George Best'' (1987) * ''Bizarro'' (1989) * '' Seamonsters'' (1991) The group performed at major festivals and appeared in national and indie charts, plus TV shows. ''Bizarro'' is the second studio album by The Wedding Present. It was released in October 1989 by their record label, RCA. About the album The Wedding Present's second studio album—and first "proper" album for RCA—came soon after the '' Ukrainian John Peel Sessions / Українські Виступи в Івана Піла'' folk music side project. Technically speaking, only one single was taken from the album, "Kennedy", which provided the band with their first Top 40 hit, reaching #33. In early 1990, The Wedding Present re-recorded "Brassneck" with Steve Albini, which reached #24 in the UK charts. The single and its B-sides were later included on U.S. release of the album, and are also included on the ''Singles 1989-1991'' compilation. The US CD version contains the Wedding Present's cover of "Box Elder", an early song by then unknown American band Pavement. Hit Parade 1
In 1992, The Wedding Present decided to release a limited edition single every month, each featuring an original track on the A side and a cover on the B side. The tracks were compiled as two LPs called ''Hit Parade 1'' and ''Hit Parade 2'' and re-released as a double CD in 2003 called ''The Hit Parade''. The plan to release 12 singles in a year was an attempt to match Elvis Presley's record of 12 top 40 singles in a year which he had achieved in 1957. The singles, each in an edition of 10,000, were deleted soon after release. They were critically acclaimed and each charted in the top 40. Revisiting the album in 2013, the band played all the songs on their UK and European tour. Pachyderm Studio
Pachyderm Recording Studio is a residential music recording studio located in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, United States, 35.8 mi (57.6 km) southeast of Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. It is located in a secluded old-growth forest in rural Minnesota. The studio was founded in 1988 by Jim Nickel, Mark Walk and Eric S. Anderson, with acoustic design by Bret Theney of Westlake Audio. It boasted the same Neve 8068 recording console that was used in Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios as well as Studer tape machines. The house was designed by Herb Bloomberg, architect of Old Log Theatre and founder of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. The studio went into a decline in the mid-2000s, after original co-owner Jim Nickel sold the property. It went into a state of disrepair for many years, though bands occasionally still recorded there. Simon Smith (drummer)
Simon Smith has been the drummer with several British Indie rock bands, most notably The Wedding Present from Leeds, which he joined in 1988, and also worked with its offshoot The Ukrainians. Career Simon Smith started out briefly as a member of The Chorus with Peter Solowka, who also became a member of The Wedding Present. The Chorus released tracks on the AAZ record label from 1983 to 1985 including the 7" double A side single "These Stones" / "Diamond Mine". Simon left The Chorus to join stable mates The Sinister Cleaners in 1985, replacing the drum machine that had featured on their earlier releases. He released 3 12" EPs with The Sinister Cleaners and toured the UK and Europe with them from 1985 to 1987. "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)" is a song by the British rock band Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, which was released in 1975 by EMI as the lead single from the band's third studio album ''The Best Years of Our Lives''. Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942October 27, 2013) was an American musician, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band the Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades.
