Scutelleridae is a Family (biology), family of Hemiptera, true bugs. They are commonly known as jewel (stink) bugs or metallic shield bugs due to their often brilliant coloration. With the name based on the Asian genus ''Scutellera'', they are also known as shield-backed bugs due to the enlargement of the thoracic Scutellum (insect anatomy), scutellum into a continuous shield over the Abdomen (insect anatomy), abdomen and wings. This latter characteristic distinguishes them from most other families within Heteroptera, and may lead to misidentification as a beetle rather than a bug. These insects use their Piercing-sucking mouthpart, piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant juices from a variety of different species, including some commercial crops. Tectocorinae
''Tectocoris diophthalmus'', commonly known as the hibiscus harlequin bug or cotton harlequin bug, is the sole member of the genus ''Tectocoris''Cassis, G. & Vanags, L. It is a brightly coloured convex and rounded shield-shaped bug with a metallic sheen that grows to about 20 mm. Jean Guillaume Audinet-Serville (; his name, before the French Revolution, Revolution, included a Nobiliary particle, particle: Audinet de Serville) was a French entomologist, born on 11 November 1775 in Paris. He died on 27 March 1858 in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. Life and career He was introduced to entomology by Madame de Grostête-Tigny who was fascinated, like her husband, by chemistry and insects. Through her, Audinet-Serville met Pierre André Latreille (1762–1833). Latreille worked with him on the ''Dictionnaire des Insectes de l’Encyclopédie méthodique'' ("The Methodical Encyclopedia Dictionary of Insects").
