Scott Rains
Scott Rains (November 27, 1956 – April 30, 2016) was an American travel writer, consultant, and advocate for disabled people. Early life and education Scott Paul Rains was born on November 27, 1956, in Midlothian, Illinois, to Lois Mazalan (1930–1986) and Francis Clarence Dombrowski-Rains (1919–2010). His parents later moved their small family of four to Seattle, Washington in December 1958. Study-abroad opportunities in high school took Rains to Guatemala and Belize, and he recalled this as the beginning of his interest in travel. He became quadriplegic at age 17, in 1972, after a spinal surgery. Rains attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he majored in linguistics and led the Disabled Students' Commission. Blue Island, Illinois
Blue Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois, located approximately south of Chicago's Loop. Blue Island is adjacent to the city of Chicago and shares its northern boundary with that city's Morgan Park neighborhood. The population was 22,558 at the 2020 United States Census. Blue Island was established in the 1830s as a way station for settlers traveling on the Vincennes Trace, and the settlement prospered because it was conveniently situated a day's journey outside of Chicago. The late-nineteenth-century historian and publisher Alfred T. Andreas made the following observation regarding the appearance of the young community in ''History of Cook County Illinois'' (1884), "The location of Blue Island Village is a beautiful one. Universal design is the design of buildings, products or environments to make them accessible to people, regardless of age, disability or other factors. It addresses common barriers to participation by creating things that can be used by the maximum number of people possible. Curb cuts or sidewalk ramps, which are essential for people in wheelchairs but also used by all, are a common example of universal design.
