Scotlandville
Scotlandville is a community located in north Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. It was originally a small, independent rural community that developed along the Mississippi River in northern East Baton Rouge Parish. In 1914, Southern University and A&M College relocated to this community. Gradually Scotlandville became industrialized, beginning with a Standard Oil refinery in 1909, and was a destination of Black people to urban areas in the Great Migration beginning around World War I. Its growth was stimulated also by construction of railroads along the Mississippi River. While still independent, Scotlandville became the largest majority-black community in the state. Eugene "Eda" Wade
Eugene "Eda" Wade (November 27, 1939 – April 15, 2021), sometimes written as Eugene "Edaw" Wade, was an African American muralist, educator, and artist mainly based in Chicago, Illinois. His artworks concentrated on Black power and Afrocentric themes. He was also an active member in the Black Arts Movement. Early years Eugene "Eda" Wade was born in Scotlandville, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Wade was educated in Southern University, class of 1964, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. In his early years, he gave himself the nickname and artwork signature "Edaw", which is his last name spelled backwards. Later, "Edaw" is often shortened into "Eda". The East Baton Rouge Parish School System, also known as East Baton Rouge Schools (EBR Schools) or the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board, is a public school district headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. East Baton Rouge Parish Library (EBRPL) is the public library system of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. It serves Baton Rouge and other cities in the parish. History The East Baton Rouge Public Library was established in 1939 with the donation of second-hand collected books from the city. Quick to expand, the library had eight branches within its first three years as a system. Since 1986, the library has been funded by a 10-year dedicated property tax. This tax, funded at 11.1 mills, provides funding for all library operations, improvements, and salaries. Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport , also known as Ryan Field, is a public use airport located four miles (7 km) north of the central business district of Baton Rouge, a city in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. The airport was originally Harding Field during World War II and was used by the United States Army Air Forces Technical Service Command as a maintenance and supply base. Its uses also included training pilots to fly P-47 Thunderbolts. One of the Thunderbolt pilots trained at Harding was Quentin Aanenson, who survived the war, and in 2007 appeared in Ken Burns' '' The War'', a PBS film about World War II.
