''The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy'' (sometimes named ''The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy through 1968'') is a three volume reference work on science fiction and fantasy, edited by Donald H. Tuck and published by Advent:Publishers, Advent. Volume 1 (Who's Who, A-L) was published in 1974. Volume 2 (Who's Who, M-Z) was published in 1978. Volume 3 (Miscellaneous) was published in 1982. The first two volumes contain about 2500 articles. The work mostly covers the period 1945–1968. Volume 3 won a Hugo Award in the Hugo Award for Best Related Work, Nonfiction category. ''The Visual Encyclopedia of Science Fiction'' is an illustrated collection of bibliographic essays on the history and subject matter of science fiction. It was edited by Brian Ash and published in 1977 by Pan Books in the UK and Harmony/Crown Books in the US. Summary The book starts with a parallel chronology of significant events in the fields of science fiction stories, magazines, novels, movies/TV/radio, and fandom, from 1805 to 1976. The book's thematic sections contain introductions by science fiction authors, and extensive bibliographies of science fiction works featuring each theme. It includes extended essays on science fiction, called "Deep Probes". The chapters are numbered in the style of a technical manual. Illustrations are primarily book and magazine covers, and interior illustrations from magazines, including a number of illustrations by Virgil Finlay, among others. ''Encyclopedia of Science Fiction'' is a 1978 book of essays about the science fiction genre, largely as a literary form but also covering cinema, TV and illustration. Articles and Content The articles were written by a number of well known writers, critics, and editors, covering a number of topics, including the history of the genre, alien encounters, technology, and sci-fi art and cinema. The consultant editor was fantasy and science fiction author Robert Holdstock who also contributed a chapter on modern perceptions of science fiction. The foreword was written by Isaac Asimov. Other notable contributors include novelists Brian Stableford, Harry Harrison, and Christopher Priest, the editor and publisher Malcolm Edwards, and the astronomer Patrick Moore. It was edited by Gary Westfahl and consists of three volumes of 200 entries each. The first two volumes contain entries organized by themes, such as "Aliens in Space", "Asia" or "Rats and Mice", while the third volume lists works such as novels and films which are considered defining for the science fiction and fantasy genres. The reviews of the work were mixed, with most reviewers finding this encyclopedia to be a commendable effort, but criticizing the work for being not comprehensive enough yet overpriced (at $349.95).
